–Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan are calling the action that is taped, as always, from Orlando, Georgia. Heenan discusses the celebration in Bucksnort, Tennessee for Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buck’s tag team title win on WCW Saturday Night.
–Opening Contest: Meng (w/Colonel Robert Parker) (24-2-1) pins Red Tyler after a thrust kick at 3:25:
Meng slowly pounds away as Schiavone and Heenan hype the tag team match that Meng will participate in at Clash of the Champions and then he wows the crowd with a somersault splash. Tyler powers out of a nerve hold spot, unusual for a jobber, but just gets hit in the throat when he gets to his feet and Meng prevails.
–Gene Okerlund interviews Ric Flair and Arn Anderson. Anderson says Vader’s past opponents feared him, but he and Flair are not scared. Anderson promises that he and Flair are going to tire Vader out, which will help them defeat him. Flair echoes those statements with his usual craziness.
–Kamala (w/Kevin Sullivan) (5-0) pins Ron Thompson after a splash at 2:34:
Thompson tries to use speed to catch Kamala off guard, but he ends up in a bearhug and then Sullivan beats him up on the floor. At least Sullivan’s attack is justified because Thompson beat him by disqualification a few weeks ago. After the bell, Kamala gouges Thompson’s eyes before Sullivan runs in and restrains him.
–Big Bubba Rogers (18-5-1) defeats Bart Sawyer after the Big Bubba Slam at 3:40:
Rogers has not won a match since May 29, when he won a squash on WCW Prime against Kenny Kendall. That winless streak ends today as Rogers plants Sawyers with a big spinebuster, with Rogers going airborne to complete the move, and has time during the match to tie his boot. This squash would have been better if Rogers won in less than two minutes since he filled it with too many chokes and restholds.
–The Blue Bloods (17-3-1) defeat Mike Khoury & Leroy Howard when Lord Steven Regal makes Howard submit to the Regal Stretch at 2:59:
Howard is awkward when coming off the top rope to do a double axe handle to Regal but at least this time he hits the right man as Howard hit his own partner in a WWF squash earlier in the year. Regal appears to split Howard in half when doing a German suplex and that makes the Regal Stretch a foregone conclusion.
–Okerlund interviews Meng, Kurasawa, and Colonel Robert Parker. Okerlund refers to Kurasawa as “the new Meng.” Parker says that his men are the best tag team in the world, seeming to undercut his other team that have the tag team titles. Okerlund asks Kurasawa about his background, to which Kurasawa says nothing.
–Alex Wright & Brian Pillman defeat Harlem Heat (w/Sister Sherri) (36-5-2) via disqualification when Sherri interferes at 8:18:
Wright and Pillman competed against each other at The Great American Bash. That could be an impediment to their teaming up, but the announcers never bring it up. Based on the abilities of all the participants, this had the potential to be a really fun match but the Heat keep Wright grounded, negating his ability to showcase some of the better parts of his arsenal and their offense is all over the place in terms of psychology. Pillman gets the hot tag and Sherri rakes his eyes off camera in view of the referee, causing the Heat to get disqualified. A very disappointing main event that was just there to fill time. Rating: *
The Last Word: Since Harlem Heat are positioned as the next challengers for the tag team titles the outcome of the feature match made little sense. There was no need to protect Alex Wright or Brian Pillman because are doing anything substantive. A win by interference would have been preferable to the horribly booked ending we got at the end of today’s broadcast.
