Short but maybe difficult question:

Let’s say that when Bret punches McMahon after the screwjob, Vince hits his head on a metal locker and dies. Apart from the legal consequences for Bret, to what extent would history be changed? Would the WWF have been swallowed shortly thereafter?

Yup. Not even a particularly difficult question. USA Network was reportedly on the verge of cancelling RAW until the Tyson stuff turned things around, and if Vince wasn't around to trigger the comeback as Mr. McMahon, then Turner would have likely bought up the company.
