The weird mounted cameras

Is it just me, or did those weird little cameras mounted on the barriers just seem both needless and potentially dangerous (I'm sure someone almost went head-first into one during the Men's battle royal, for instance)?
I don't think they even got used – was any footage even broadcast from them at any point?
It’s for their weird hologram effect, apparently. So even more pointless.
