Why a steel chair?

By Scott Keith on 1 December 2018

Hey Scott,

Was talking to some non-fans about wrestling and casually said, "and then he hit him with a chair." And they were like, "a chair?" It got me thinking: as wrestling fans, the chair is THE weapon of choice. But why? How did the chair become the weapon of choice for pro wrestlers. Where did it originate? Did somebody do it once and it just caught on?

I'm not sure about the origins, but it makes sense as a weapon. Readily available, visually impressive even to people in the cheap seats, makes a big noise when used and spreads out the impact over a large surface area (when you hit someone on the back.) If you put your hands up, it looks just like you're taking a chair to the face! What's not to love?
