–Vince McMahon and Dok Hendrix are the commentary team for today’s show and they are still in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
–Opening Contest: Man Mountain Rock (14-0) defeats The Black Phantom via submission to the Whammy Bar at 1:58:
Rock plays his usual jam before the match as McMahon loses his wits on commentary in an attempt to get it over for the viewers at home. Rock also uses some more power moves in this bout, using a powerslam and then trapping the dazed Phantom with the Whammy Bar to win.
–McMahon discusses Fatu’s bad childhood and a video package shows Fatu, decked in a colorful jacket, visiting his old community in Sunnydale, California. This was a repackaging of Fatu into an inspirational, anti-drug character after the Headshrinkers were discontinued as a tag team. The timing was really weird, though, as the audience was supposed to immediately forget that he had the gimmick of a Samoan savage a month ago.
–Non-Title Match: Owen Hart & Yokozuna (WWF Tag Team Champions w/Jim Cornette & Mr. Fuji) (9-0) defeat Mike Khoury & John Crystal after Owen pins Crystal after a Yokozuna leg drop to the back of the head at 2:45:
Thankfully Khoury and Crystal have ditched the denim short look that they sported against Tekno Team 2000 several weeks ago, opting for striped singlets instead to show unity with their fellow jobbers backstage. The Allied Powers cut an insert promo during the match, with Lex Luger and the British Bulldog vowing to win the tag team titles at In Your House 2. Khoury and Crystal have some success with Owen, but Yokozuna is a one man wrecking crew and the tag team champions remain undefeated.
–Stephanie Wiand provides the Live Event News segment. Wiand announces that Jean-Pierre LaFitte will face Bret Hart at the next Madison Square Garden show, with LaFitte promising to beat Bret in front of all of his loyal fans. Bret cuts a poor promo in response, tying LaFitte’s last name into how he knows a lot about “feet” following his “kiss my foot” match with Jerry Lawler at The King of the Ring.
–Hunter-Hearst Helmsley (9-0) defeats Duke Droese (13-2) after the Pedigree at 6:43 shown:
This is Helmsley’s first competitive bout in the company and McMahon hypes this as a battle between the wealthy and the working class. Much of the brawling in the match is awkward, with Helmsley working a long chinlock on a few occasions, but both men find a groove after the commercial break, with Droese scoring several near falls from his usual power moves. However, Droese makes the babyface mistake of putting his head down too early when Helmsley comes of the ropes and is beaten by the Pedigree. Rating: *½
–McMahon puts over the WWF’s participation in the Summer Olympics, which just concluded in Connecticut.
–A recap of Sid unveiling his lumberjacks on Monday Night RAW is shown.
–The audience is treated to another showing of Jeff Jarrett’s “With My Baby Tonight” music video.
–Aldo Montoya (10-5) beats Tony DeVito with a springboard flying bulldog at 2:48:
Adam Maseth is our special fan ring announcer and he does not have a lot of enthusiasm when introducing the participants. Hendrix makes fun of Montoya, referring to him as “Alpo” on commentary and trying to get McMahon to do the same. This squash goes on too long, with Montoya running through a lot of high-flying moves before going to his convoluted finisher for the win.
–Barry Didinski, who McMahon jokes needs some elocution lessons, tries to get fans to buy a Shawn Michaels t-shirt. Call 1-800-TITAN-91 and have $21 on hand to get yours (not including shipping & handling). If you buy the shirt, you can get your own pair of Shawn Michaels sunglasses!
–Waylon Mercy is shown talking to Jerry Flynn backstage, telling him that he wants a good, clean match and that both of them should be sure to follow the rules. Mercy touches off the segment with an evil smile to the camera.
–Call 1-900-737-4WWF to pit your wrestling skills against Shawn Michaels for $1.49 per minute! McMahon says that Michaels is undefeated in the game.
–Waylon Mercy (3-0) defeats Jerry Flynn via submission to the sleeper hold at 3:36:
Mercy refuses to give Flynn a fair break in the ropes, making McMahon got apoplectic on commentary. Mercy has a fantastic character but this squash does him little good, as he mindlessly beats on Flynn for minutes on end before performing a mercy killing with the sleeper. Mercy gets in one last parting stomp on the unconscious Flynn before leaving the ring.
–Wiand puts over the Indian strap match between Bam Bam Bigelow and Tatanka at Madison Square Garden on August 12. Tatanka and Bigelow both have straps as they cut weird promos, with Tatanka saying he fought little kids with a strap growing up and Bigelow making allusions to how he has experience with the strap when being dragged around by a great dane.
–A reply of the Isaac Yankem vignette where he drills a patient’s teeth aggressively after she says she is a Bret Hart fan is shown.
–Tune in next week to see Savio Vega & the 1-2-3 Kid square off against the Blu Brothers!
The Last Word: This was a pedestrian episode of Superstarsas the company marches its way to In Your House 2. Hunter-Hearst Helmsley gets a vote of confidence by winning his first feature match, while Waylon Mercy gets another win to solidify his status for some big matches down the road.
