SMOKY MOUNTAIN WRESTLING TV – June 6th, 1992

– Last week on SMW TV… We recapped the entire Volunteer Slam, with highlights from all seven Tournament matches, as well as the Tag Team Championship Match between the Heavenly Bodies and Party Patrol… Bobby Fulton had unkind words for the Heavenly Bodies, vowing revenge when his brother, Jackie, recovers… Tim Horner pinned Buddy Landell for the Mountain Mayhem paycheck, but Landell bloodied him up afterwards, tore the check up, and stuffed it down his throat.

– Taped on May 25th from the Memorial Auditorium in Spartanburg, SC. According to the WON, fans attending the taping had their cars papered with advertisements for a Herb Abrams “UWF” show three weeks later. Yes, UWF was still alive, but nobody cared. Even though we’ve had two episodes since the Volunteer Slam, this is our first with the newly crowned SMW Heavyweight Champion, and it seems like we haven’t had a traditional episode in quite a while, with two recap shows, a preview show, and one episode devoted entirely to “Mountain Mayhem.”

– Bob Caudle and “Dirty” Dutch Mantell are calling the action, unless otherwise noted. New Champion Brian Lee, Dirty White Boy, and the Batten Twins will be in action. In today’s Main Event, Dixie Dy-No-Mite takes on Paul Orndorff. Barry Horowitz storms the set and wants to tell Dutch and the Smoky Mountain fans he’s not a loser, he’s a winner, and he’s going to prove that to everyone.

– “Primetime” Brian Lee (SMW Champion) vs. “Bad Boy” Barry Horowitz:
Horowitz is determined to be the new SMW Heavyweight Champion, despite this being a Non-Title Match. Horowitz avoids a lock-up and pats himself on the back. Lee returns the favor, throwing Horowitz into the ropes. Dutch says Barry’s talent is better than what his record is. Lee gives chase around the ring. Back inside and he throws Bad Boy across the ring with a hip toss. Lee with a dropkick, followed by a side headlock takeover. Whip and Lee drops an elbow across the back. Horowitz pops an elbow across the jaw and unloads with uppercuts. He catches Lee charging into the corner and connects with a jaw breaker. Horowitz with a bulldog into the turnbuckle and school boy for barely a one count. He takes Lee over with a gut-wrench suplex, but gets straddled climbing the ropes. Lee with a whip and Power-Slam for two. Whip, Horowitz sets up for a back drop, but Lee counters with the Cancelation for three at 4:04. *1/2 Decent action, but Lee was hardly in position to look bad. Post-match, Horowitz throws a bit of a tempter-tantrum.

– Highlights of Brian Lee taking on The Dirty White Boy and Paul Orndorff at the Volunteer Slam. Bob Caudle is standing by with the new Champion, and he’s got at least two scores to settle. Every time he goes to the ring, he’s got either Orndorff or the Dirty White Boy on his back. Lee says if he has to get dirty or wonderful, then that’s what he’s going to do to keep his belt.

– Bob Caudle promotes SMW’s “Meet the Stars” Autograph Party, which is basically meet and greets before SMW live events.

– The Dirty White Boy (w/ Mr. Ron Wright) vs. Tommy Angel:
I’m so glad to see Mr. Ron Wright back at ringside in his wheel chair, but even more happy to see Angel’s glorious mullet. Lockup and Angel with a hip throw. He grabs a side headlock and comes off the ropes with a dropkick. White Boy with a side headlock and shoulder tackle. Crisscross and Angel takes him over with an arm drag. Whip and the White Boy bulldozes through Angel, then takes him over with a suplex. Whip and White Boy with a clothesline. To the corner and Angel avoids a charge. White Boy side-steps an elbow and quickly finishes with the Bucksnort Blaster at 3:14. Not the prettiest match towards the end. White Boy gave a little too much offense, but ended up winning with ease.

– Bob Caudle is standing by with the Dirty White Boy and Ron Wright. Wright says he’s never been so mad and disgusted like when he saw how is man was robbed at the Volunteer Slam. His heart is acting up and he even had a light stroke! He’s going to file a complaint and grievance to Bob Armstrong for causing his medical setbacks. He might be in that wheel chair for up to two more years because of it! White Boy says Lee is the biggest crook walking the face of the earth, and questions how much money went into the pocket of the referee. Brian Lee storms the ring to challenge them to get in the ring and take the belt. Ron Wright says his heart is acting up again and doesn’t think he can stand the excitement of watching his man tear up Lee in the ring. White Boy backs down, using Wright’s “medical emergency” as an excuse to avoid physical (and fair) confrontation.

– The Batten Twins are standing by with comments on the Heavenly Bodies. They’re going to take the Heavenly Bodies to war.

– Bart & Brad Batten vs. Joe Cazana & Scott Sandlin:
When Cazana is around, you know the match isn’t going long, especially when his partner is lower on the food chain than he is! The only thing I hate about recapping matches with twins is not knowing how to identify them from each other. Batten #1 starts with Cazana. Cazana with a side headlock and shoulder tackle, but runs into an arm drag and plays ping-pong between the Twins. Whip and the Battens with a double clothesline. The Battens take turns working the left arm. Cazana tags out and Sandlin makes an awkward motion into an arm drag. Whip and the Battens with a double diving elbow. Whip and diving double shoulder tackle for two. Referee Mark Curtis has gone clean-shaven since our last taping. Cazana with a whip and elbow. Sandlin tags in and gets nailed with a dropkick. The enhancement heels get thrown together and a missile dropkick finishes Sandlin at 2:39. The Battens had decent double team spots, but with the Fantastics at the top, there’s not much for them to do.

– Bobby Fulton via telephone is talking about the recovery of his brother and coming back to get down and dirty with the Heavenly Bodies. He guarantees that they won’t be responsible for their actions when they get Cornette, Stan Lane, and Tom Prichard in the ring.

– Bob Caudle is standing by with Jim Cornette and The Heavenly Bodies. They hype cards coming to Beckley, WV on June 7th Morristown, TN on June 13th. Cornette wonders if Jackie is going to be like the people in Spartanburg on welfare who take the hard-earned money of tax payers like Lane and Prichard. Next time they get in the ring, they’re going to target to bandaged knee of Jackie and take him out for good. They’ve brought him a gift, and it’s a sign that reads “I Will Work for Food”.

– Highlights of last week’s TV Main Event between Tim Horner and Buddy Landell for the $5,000 check intended for the winner of Mountain Mayhem. Buddy Landell is standing by with comments, claiming Horner tried throwing the powder in his face during the Battle Royal. He had a 115 degree temperature and had already worked 90 times that day, so Horner got lucky. He’s just griping because he never had $5,000 in his life, and should be glad he’s not out here. Horner storms the set and immediately throws punches. They must’ve clipped a cable in their shambling, because a graphic appears “Do not adjust your TV set. The wrestlers have caused an audio problem.” Either that, or a needless work. We return from commercial, and Tim Horner is here to apologize for disrupting television. He wants Landell in the ring, and wants to put his $5,000 winnings up to get him, any time, any place.

– Jimmy Golden vs. Ben Jordan:
Golden has traded in his robe for a simple wind breaker. They shake hands, but Golden (unsuccessfully) attempts a sneak attack. Lockup and Golden with a shove across the ring. Golden wastes time posing, so Jordan dropkicks him out of the ring. Golden with a boot to the midsection and elbow across the back of the head. Scoop slam for two. Whip to the ropes and Jordan turns a crucifix into a sunset flip. Back slide for two. Whip reversed and Jordan with a twisting cross body for two. Another whip and Golden nails him with a dropkick for three at 2:31. Short match with them still pushing the Golden/Robert Gibson rivalry. You think Jim Brunzell is jealous of Golden’s amazing dropkick?

– Bob Caudle is standing by with Commissioner Bob Armstrong, and he’s allegedly booty bothered by Paul Orndorff. He denies “having it in” for Orndorff, and has fined him $500 for using a foreign object at the Volunteer Slam. Brian Lee has demanded a suspension not be levied, wanting to take care of Orndorff in the ring, instead.

– Dixie Dy-No-Mite vs. “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff:
TV Main Event. Based on depth chart positioning, this shouldn’t be too much of a challenge for Orndorff. Dutch calls attention to the fact that Orndorff doesn’t have entrance music. Lockup into the corner, Dixie avoids an overhead cheap shot. Dixie grabs the arm and goes to work with a wrist-lock. Orndorff escapes with a mule kick, but walks into a slam and arm drag. Dutch argues that the Confederate Kick should be banned because the impact is like whiplash in a car wreck. They fight over a hammer-lock, with Orndorff yanking the hair to maintain control. Orndorff with a slam, but misses an elbow drop. Dixie with a deep arm drag into the arm-bar. Orndorff with a knee to the midsection and signature elbow drop. Whip and Orndorff with a clothesline. Dixie fights out of a chin-lock with blows to the midsection. Orndorff rakes the eyes and takes Dixie over with a snap mare. He comes off the top, but meets a fist on the way down. Dixie with strikes, whip to the ropes, and dropkick. Whip and Orndorff hangs back on another dropkick attempt. Whip to the corner and Dixie catches Orndorff with an elbow. Dixie hits the Confederate Kick. He comes off the top with a flying body press, but Orndorff rolls through and hooks the tights for three at 5:44. **1/4 Solid action, and Orndorff continues his streak of needing to defeat inferior opponents with underhanded tactics.

– Bob Caudle is standing by with Paul Orndorff, and he’s STILL complaining that only his finishing move is banned from competition. Next time he meets Brian Lee, he’s going to hurt him bad enough that he won’t be able to defend the belt.

– Next Week: Brian Lee takes on Rip Rogers for the SMW Championship! Rip Rogers may have a record of 0-Infinity in SMW, but you can’t argue Lee isn’t a fighting champion.

Final Thoughts: The wheels are in motion, and it looks like we can look forward to the following: Brian Lee vs. The Dirty White Boy (or possibly Paul Orndorff), Tim Horner vs. Buddy Landell, Robert Gibson vs. Jimmy Golden, and The Heavenly Bodies vs. The Fantastics (and the rest of the tag division in the absence of Bobby and Jackie Fulton). All but one of those rivalries developed before the Volunteer Slam, but Lee/White Boy has escalated because of the super-card, and we’ve yet to tap into the potential of the Bodies and Fantastics. As for Golden and Gibson, I’m sure there’s going to be more to that than we’ve already seen. The Batten Twins got a TV victory, likely to give them shine with live event matches scheduled against the Heavenly Bodies, and we got a solid TV Main Event between Orndorff and Dixie Dy-No-Mite. Another easy 45-minutes to sit through.
