–Vince McMahon and Gorilla Monsoon are doing commentary and they are still taped from West Palm Beach, Florida.
–Opening Twenty Man Battle Royal Contest: The British Bulldog wins, last eliminating Jacob Blu at 16:44 shown:
Participants: The British Bulldog, King Kong Bundy, the 1-2-3 Kid, Mantaur, Duke “the Dumpster” Droese, Jerry Lawler, the Blu Brothers, Men on a Mission, the Heavenly Bodies, Aldo Montoya, Adam Bomb, Shawn Michaels, Henry Godwinn, the Headshrinkers, Bob Holly, and Kwang
Shawn Michaels would have to be the favorite in most cases but the British Bulldog moves heaven and earth to get to him so Michaels prefers to run away and eliminate himself seconds into the contest. About half of the company’s active roster are in this bout and just like the Royal Rumble it is not a pretty sight in terms of drawing or star power. Interestingly, the face/heel divide is not as clear in this battle royal as faces work to eliminate other faces and the heels do the same. Poor Mantaur’s makeup is not suited for long matches and it looks like he is sporting two black eyes by the end of this. The real highlight of the contest is when Jerry Lawler is lightly dumped to the floor by the Bulldog and Kid and tries to exploit the rules by standing on one foot. This lasts a while until Bret Hart walks out and stomps Lawler’s standing foot, causing Lawler to be eliminated and furthering their feud. Shawn Michaels tries to help Jacob Blu win by the end of the match by attacking the Bulldog but it is all for naught as Jacob makes an ill-advised charge at the Bulldog and that ends the bout. Weird choice to have Blu go to the end but I like it because it really sells the concept of how anyone can win a battle royal. Rating: **½
–Stephanie Wiand keeps hypes the WrestleMania XI press conference at the Harley Davidson Café at noon on Thursday. She also reminds fans of the second annual Fan Festival.
–Jeff Jarrett and the Roadie are shown talking backstage.
–Non-Title Match: Jeff Jarrett (Intercontinental Champion w/The Roadie) (5-2) defeats Ben Jordan via submission to the figure-four leglock at 3:01:
Steve “The Miz” Mizerak, a professional pool player, is our guest ring announcer. However, he must have a phobia of getting into the ring because he does his announcing from the ringside steps. Jordan makes the jobber mistake of choice against Jarrett recently – going to the top rope – but this just results in him eating a superplex and figure-four and losing. McMahon remind us that Razor Ramon wants the Intercontinental title back and urges fans to attend the “In High Gear” tour to see if Ramon is able to regain the gold.
–Todd Pettengill tells us that “WrestleMania fever” begins next week, whatever that happens to be.
–Man Mountain Rock (3-0) pins Bob Cook after the Wallapalooza at 1:32:
It is funny that McMahon gives Rock’s real name and tells us that we may have seen him in the NCAA wrestling ranks before he came to the WWF. That was more of a call you would expect for Jim Ross rather than McMahon, who tends to like his own gimmicks and creations. Rock tosses around Cook with ease before finishing him with a move that Monsoon has difficulty pronouncing.
–Owen lets us know that he is wrestling next and that he wants to face the Smoking Gunns for the WWF tag team titles.
–A weird vignette announces that Nicholas Turturro will be at WrestleMania as a celebrity. He interrogates Paul Bearer about the disappearance of Yokozuna but Bearer is wearing a dress. Mr. Fuji is also there goading Turturro on, but then the lights go out and when they come back on Fuji is wearing the dress so Turturro goes after Fuji instead because he is a “crossdresser that disrespects the American flag.”
–Owen Hart (3-1) defeats Gary Scott via submission to the Sharpshooter at 2:45:
McMahon says that Bret Hart is Emmy bound after appearing in Lonesome Dove and then gets even more ridiculous by saying the Bret could win an Oscar or an ESPY before his career is over. Owen punishes Scott with some crisp technical moves and uses his awesome belly-to-belly suplex to setup the Sharpshooter for the finish. Owen should have used the belly-to-belly more as a setup move to his finisher because he had one of the best snaps on that move that I have ever seen.
–Stephanie Wiand hypes the Fan Festival again. WWF Champion Diesel lets us know that he will be at the WrestleMania XI press conference and he delivers a really weird promo about it with big eyes.
The Last Word: No feature matches are hyped next week so it might turn into jobber central as “WrestleMania Fever” kicks in. This show was fun, though, as the battle royal had some memorable moments and it furthered various feuds in the company.
