WCW Wednesday: Part XXVIII – the Memorial Edition!

This week’s column is dedicated to the memory of Owen Hart (May 7, 1965 – May 23, 1999).

On March 12, 1991, Owen made his WCW TV debut in a squash match against Mark Kyle. Although most of his singles matches were all one-sided in his favor (lone exception against Bobby Eaton on 3/22/91), Owen got the opportunity to tag with fellow Hart Dungeon member Brian Pillman and defeat Freebirds Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin. Additionally, he tagged with Ricky Morton on the Main Event shown 4/13/91.

So where did it lead: Since Owen did not want to relocate his family to Atlanta, Owen left WCW and signed with the WWF. While there, he was paired with the “Anvil” Jim Neidhart, and their team was named the New Foundation. In the New Foundation’s sole PPV match, they defeated the Orient Express at Royal Rumble ’92.

Ultimately, Owen would spend the rest of his career in the WWF until his untimely death in 1999. In addition to being a two-time Intercontinental champion, he was also a four-time tag team champion with Yokozuna, Davey Boy Smith, and Jeff Jarrett. Lest I neglect to mention, he also won TWO Slammy awards.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hart family. RIP Owen.
