3 man commentary teams

By Scott Keith on 21 October 2015

Hey Scott.

I know WCW did it, and WWE has done in for the the past 15 years, but why do WWE still use 3 man commentary teams? No other wrestling or sports show uses more than 2. Surely it is an extra expense to have 3 and doesn’t add that much to the product.

The baseball playoffs currently have about 18 people jammed into the booth. So there’s that example. That being said, it’s come to the point where they just do three people because it’s the way it’s always been done, even though two is the gold standard. The worst has become NXT with three people who sound EXACTLY THE SAME all yammering at each other. I don’t even know what purpose that a Jerry Lawler or Byron Saxton serves on the main show. Especially Saxton — he was a wrestler for about 3 seconds and offers no real insight on the product, so why should I care about what he has to say? I guess that’s the same problem with a lot of their announcers and talking heads, though.
