Ahmed heel turn question

Was the Ahmed Johnson heel turn (where he inexplicably joins the Nation Of Domination despite being involved in an endless feud with them) just one of those Vince Russo "swerve for the sake of a swerve and logic be damned!" things?

I was beyond bored by the feud but the heel turn made me hate the angle even more.

​I can KINDA see the logic behind it in the "can’t beat them so I’ll join them" sense, but Ahmed could beat them and had done so several times already. And then he got injured a bunch more times anyway. But yeah, there was no ​deep reasoning behind the turn that I’m aware of.
