Sting, seriously?

Someone has probably brought this up before, but I can't be the only person confused by all the excitement over the idea of Sting coming to WWE, especially as a possible Undertaker WM opponent. Why does/would anyone give a shit about Sting in 2014? It's been a VERY long time since he did anything relevant in wrestling (TNA=lol) and I bet that if Vince thought he was anything close to a big deal he would have brought him in by 2003. Also, he is nowhere near good enough in the ring these days to handle a big Taker match. Am I crazy?
Well I guess we'll find out. But Sting made the most money of his career sitting in the rafters and looking menacing, so why not try it again?
