The SmarK Rant for WCW Worldwide – 10.19.91

Taped from somewhere, sometime in October

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone & Magnum TA

Bill Kazmaier v. Mike Thor

Bill hits Thor with an atomic drop to send him to the floor while Magnum promises the debut of a VERY SPECIAL WRESTLING HOLD later in the match. I bet it’s a bearhug. Back in the ring, Thor tries a headlock and gets tossed away as a result and Kaz hits him with another couple of slams and a clothesline. And in fact his special move is a bearhug to finish at 1:50, but one where he holds the guy upside down. So I was half right. Also his big finisher looks like he’s trying to give the guy the Heimlich Maneuver.

And then we get PROMO TIME from Kazmaier, as he wants to challenge “The Ultimate Package” Lex Luger for the World title.

WRESTLING NEWS NETWORK! WITH GORDON SOLIE!

Man, what’s up with those boxes at ringside? Hopefully more information to come later. Oh hey, let’s talk about Bill Kazmaier again, because he really wants to become the World champion, and gosh he’s strong. So let’s take a look at a match where he bearhugs Abdullah. Well I’m sold. Put the title on him!

Meanwhile, Paul E and Missy continue to search for the Chamber of Horrors, traveling to Texas this time to find a warehouse, where a mugger robs them with a rubber knife. And then he recognizes them from TV and decides to do impressions, so Paul clocks him with the phone.

Speaking of Paul, we’re at the point where he was actually suspended from WCW in real life because Jim Herd and Jerry Jarrett were trying to put together a program between Lex Luger and Jerry Lawler in Memphis to unify the WCW and USWA World titles. But then Paul stooged out the plan to Eddie Gilbert and it got leaked, so the whole thing fell apart. Of course he wasn’t suspended for long because he was back for the PPV.

Cactus Jack & Abdullah the Butcher v. ???

Capetta has to run away in terror before he can announce the victim names, but I don’t recognize them. Jack puts one guy on the floor and Butcher steps on him out there. Back in the ring, the other guy tags in while another mystery box is delivered to ringside. Jack just ignores it and continues beating up the meat sack in the corner. He even gives directions to Abby, who finishes the guy with the elbowdrop at 2:29! They really were the best of friends. And Abdullah just beats the shit out of the jobbers with a kendo stick until Jack talks sense into him, takes the stick away, and then proceeds to hit them even harder himself. This brings them to the mystery box, as Jack demands to know where Sting is while Abby opens the box. Jack: “I hate to use this kind of language on TV, but Sting is a PARTY POOPER!” And in the box is a Sting wrestling buddy, so Abdullah tears it apart and Jack drops an elbow on the remains. This may have been the greatest segment in the history of wrestling television.

PREVIOUSLY, ON THE WCW TOP 10…

In the ancient realm of World Championship Wrestling, the old order still held…

For Sting, the Vigilant Protector, remained supreme.

Upon the highest throne sat the Stinger, his position at the summit of the Ten unchallenged, at least for now.

But beneath him, the great houses stirred.

Ron Simmons, mighty warrior of Doom, stood second, his ascent threatening to disturb the balance of power.

Barry Windham, heir to an ancient wrestling bloodline, followed at third, watching and waiting.

El Gigante, the Colossus, towered at fourth, his purpose known only to the gods.

And Stunning Steve Austin, young and untested, held the fifth position, unaware that destiny had already begun to take an interest in him.

Dustin Rhodes, son of a legendary house, stood sixth.

Cactus Jack, battered but unbroken, occupied the seventh.

Johnny B. Badd, adorned in the sacred colors of combat, remained eighth.

Diamond Studd lurked at ninth, his intentions uncertain.

And at the bottom of the sacred ranking stood Beautiful Bobby…

tenth among the chosen.

Yet the order of the Ten is never eternal.

For every warrior who rises, another must fall.

Every throne invites a challenger.

And every week, the ancient scribes gather to answer the question that has shaken the realm since time immemorial:

Who shall rise…

AND WHO SHALL BE CAST FROM THE WCW TOP 10?

Let’s find out.

  1. Sting
  2. Ron Simmons
  3. Barry Windham
  4. Stunning Steve Austin
  5. Dustin Rhodes
  6. El Gigante
  7. Cactus Jack
  8. Diamond Studd
  9. Johnny B. Badd
  10. Terrence Taylor

Man, Bobby got cast out of the top 10? Sucks to be him.

Oz the Great and Powerful v. John Finch

Honestly he just looks like the third Beverly Brother at this point. Oz tosses Finch around and hits a flying shoulderblock before finishing with the Kansas Twister at 1:10.

Johnny B. Badd v. Scott Sandlin

Sandlin tries to throw hands with Badd and gets socked, and Badd hits him with the inverted suplex and a clothesline. Badd with an elbow to put him down again and he follows with a dropkick and adds a high knee. And the knockout punch finishes at 1:55.

Meanwhile, Lex Luger has a confrontation with Dustin Rhodes, asking him to deliver a message to Dusty, and the message is apparently a slap to the face. And then Dustin gets his ass kicked as well, just like everyone else that interacts with Luger because all the babyfaces in the company are ineffective idiots.

Dustin Rhodes v. Mr. Hughes

Dustin hits him with an armdrag, but Hughes chokes him out on the ropes and hits him with a chokeslam. Hughes puts the boots to him and drops an elbow, but Dustin makes the comeback with the POWER OF NEPOTISM. Dustin with a backdrop and a lariat and he takes out Race because MY DADDY IS THE BOOKER, but Hughes runs him into the ringpost and knocks him out. This brings out Barry Windham to check on him, but it’s a countout at 2:47.

Big Josh v. Thomas Rich

Josh cuts a promo on Rich before the match, although knowing WCW they probably wanted him to turn heel as a swerve and become Grandiose Joshua or something. He could invest in logging futures or however that works. Rich attacks with help from Taylor and works on the arm, and then boots him down for two. Rich slugs away in the corner and Josh fights back, but Rich clotheslines him down for two. Rich with a neckbreaker for two. Rich slugs away and Josh makes the comeback, running Rich into Taylor and finishing with a german suplex at 3:26. I think the Yorks had already won the six-man titles from Josh and his friends at that point but it’s not like they ever bring up those belts on TV anyway.

NEXT WEEK: Ron Simmons v. Mr. Hughes!
