The SmarK Rant for NWA Worldwide – 06.28.86
My collection is missing 06.21.86, which I believe is the Dusty v. Bubba angle.
Taped from Fayetteville, NC
Your hosts are Tony Schiavone & David Crockett, with special guest host JIM CORNETTE!
The Midnight Express v. George South & Bill Mulkey
They toss Mulkey and Bobby abuses him on the floor, and back in Condrey hits him with a brainbuster and Bobby adds the flying kneedrop. Condrey rubs his face in the mat while Cornette rants on commentary about how the fans are a bunch of “ignorant mongoloids”. There’s a word you can’t say anymore. Condrey with a backbreaker and then he puts him down again with a clothesline after picking him up and brushing him off. Bobby adds a suplex and Condrey finishes with the Stroke at 3:50.
Paul Jones and his army of geeks join us, and then someone hijacks the signal and puts up a photo of Paul with a bald head, causing the heels to all freak out.
Jimmy Garvin & Steve Regal join us to talk about the Bash matches. It’s so weird because I don’t remember Regal from this time period at all but he’s been hanging out with Garvin every week for the past few episodes and they’re clearly a team at this point.
Ronnie Garvin & Wahoo McDaniel v. Mark Fleming & Brody Chase
Wahoo and Ronnie both chop the shit out of poor Fleming and then they let Chase come in and beat the tar out of him as well. Cornette on commentary: “Wahoo has a face like he’s chasing parked cars”. Garvin bends up the jobber like a pretzel and then goes to an abdominal stretch and beats on his chest while holding that move too. Wahoo switches in for his own stretch, and Garvin hauls Fleming in for STEREO ABDOMINAL STRETCHES and the crowd actually cheers this. Wahoo goes to a chinlock on Chase as they’re really stretching this squash out for some reason and torturing this jobbers, although Garvin was clearly leaving lots of daylight on his shots at least. Back to Fleming and they hit him with a double backdrop and it’s back to Chase, as Garvin goes back to chopping on him again and Wahoo finally pins him at 6:48. Why was that match so long?
The Russians join us, and Ivan tells a story about Nikita going to the bar with Ric Flair and drinking him, HOW YOU SAY, under the table and then going home with all the women.
Black Bart v. Mike Simiani
Bart was still Mid-Atlantic champion at this point, for as much as the title meant at that point given that the Mid-Atlantic show ended and got replaced by NWA Pro that month. Bart quickly finishes with the middle rope legdrop at 1:10.
The Road Warriors v. Ron Rossi & Ben Alexander
Oddly this one is an extended squash for the Roadies, as they double-team Alexander and then bring in Rossi for a flying shoulderblock from Hawk that finishes at 1:45.
The Four Horsemen join us, and they’re celebrating whatever happened to the Road Warriors at their hands.
Dusty Rhodes joins us, and the Horsemen are gonna be paying some dues, and specifically Ole is gonna be laid up in the sawmill with his legs in traction. WRITE IT DOWN IN YOUR BOOK, DADDY. And then we a replay of Dusty smashing the chair on Bubba’s head, thankfully. Cornette’s reaction in the background is what really sells it, like even he can’t believe what he’s seeing.
Jimmy Valiant & Manny Fernandez v. Randy Mulkey & Tony Zane
Flying forearm from Manny finishes in 10 seconds.
The Road Warriors join us and they want to know why Ric Flair isn’t here this week to answer for what happened to them at the hands of the Horsemen. I guess that was the angle on the 06.21 World Championship Wrestling where Flair slapped Hawk around and the Horsemen attacked.
Ole Anderson v. Todd Champion
Todd continues sliding down the card after his initial push, as Ole finishes with the flying knee at 0:21 after a blind charge misses.
Jimmy Garvin & Steve Regal v. Rocky King & Sam Houston
Regal attacks King and puts him down with an elbow, and then Garvin finishes with a brainbuster at 0:31.
The Rock N Roll Express joins us and Big Bubba stares them down and makes sure no trouble happens, but they cut a promo on Cornette and then leave peacefully to end the show.
Next week: The Bash begins and we should get a bunch of feature matches on TV as a result!
