The Rock Confirms John Cena Will Pick His Final Opponent In WWE

By Craig Ballantyne on 14 October 2025

The Rock says John Cena will have the final say on who he faces in his retirement match.

The Rock became heavily involved in John Cena’s retirement tour early in 2025, with The Final Boss being instrumental in John Cena’s heel turn at Elimination Chamber. However, following the turn, Rock disappeared from WWE TV in a move that many fans believe hurt Cena’s heel run and ultimately soured his final year as an active wrestler.

Now a babyface again, Cena will have his final match on the December 15th edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, DC. On the New Heights podcast, The Rock was asked who he wanted to see face Cena before he hangs up his jorts for good. After joking that it could be him, The Great One said it will ultimately be Cena’s choice.

“I have a tiny bit of influence in the booking of it, but really, it’s whoever John wants. Really, that’s what it comes down to. Whoever he wants. That should be who it is.”

The Rock went on to say that Cena had earned the right to pick his last opponent, adding that he’s a “good dude.”

“It’s not me, Nick Khan, or Triple H. It’s whoever John wants. That guy has earned it. The best part about John is that he comes as advertised. Who you think he is, that’s who he is. He’s a good dude, and I love that guy.”

Who Will John Cena Face In His Final Match?

While not confirmed, it has been reported by WRKD Wrestling and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer that John Cena’s last opponent will be former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther.

Seemingly, The Ring General is set to win a tournament to determine Cena’s last challenger and will be the man to end The Last Real Champion’s 25-year career.

Who do you want to see face John Cena in his last match? Is Gunther a good choice? Let us know your thoughts below!
