BEYOND Heavy Lies the Crown 2019-20

By Andy PG on 1st January 2020

Hello, all, it’s your independent wrestling reporter Andy PG checking in. One of my resolutions was to watch more indie wrestling, so let’s kick the year off right by watching the year-end celebration from Beyond. This year’s show is called Heavy Lies the Crown and, as with previous years, is headlined by an IWTV Championship defense. As Thomas Hall would say, let’s get to it.

As always, I shill independentwrestling.tv and tell you to use a code like, say, BEYOND to get 20 free days. Dozens of indie promotions all for the same cost as the WWE Network. Worth the investment.

Side note: you will NOT see any star ratings on this show. As someone whose goal is to wrestle in the near future, I’ve been advised by multiple people that giving critiques and stuff on matches is very much frowned upon in public. It makes perfect sense. Besides, if my play-by-play doesn’t let you know whether you want to watch or not, a few ASCII characters and a one-sentence blurb won’t change your mind.  And here we go!

ALWF Event Centre: Ashes Rumble Update

By Andy PG on 14th February 2019

Notes: the AfterLife Wrestling Federation is a tribute to wrestlers who have since left us.  The concept is a WWE-style wrestling organization with the best of the past.  Hopefully you’ll see some old favorites of yours!  And now: the ALWF, for over 100 years the revolutionary force in Slam Bang Western Style Wrestling.

AfterLife Wrestling Federation — December Shows (Red)

By Andy PG on 2nd February 2019

ALWF Red: Christmas Dreams
Host: Gordon Solie

Highlights of Dusty’s war with the Heenan Family are the show-opening montage.  Dusty defeated Ray Stevens, then Gorilla Monsoon, then (albeit with help) Andre the Giant in order to earn a title chance, but he put it on the line to get the entire Heenan Family on even terms in WarGames.  During WarGames, Bockwinkel nearly choked out Dusty when Bobo Brazil headbutted Bockwinkel free and Eddie Guerrero made him submit.  Bockwinkel said three people beat him, so those three could fight amongst themselves and he’d face the winner.

AfterLife Wrestling Federation — December Shows (Blue)

By Andy PG on 2nd February 2019

ALWF Blue: The Craziest Night
Hosts: Lance Russell and Lord Alfred Hayes

A video montage set to “Stone Cold Crazy” shows how things are getting out of hand on the blue brand, with Roddy Piper and The Sheik spilling blood in no-contests while Sam Muchnick had a hand in cheating JYD out of a title match with Buddy Rogers.  It led to Muchnick being fired as brand GM and replaced by Stu Hart, who promised to handcuff himself to Muchnick to prevent interference.

AfterLife Wrestling Federation — December Shows (Gold)

By Andy PG on 2nd February 2019

The AfterLife Wrestling Federation: for over 100 years, the revolutionary force in Slam Bang Western Style Wrestling!

During the Christmas/Hannukah holidays, all three brands get their own Big Events back-to-back.  Gold goes first, then Blue, then Red.  A feature of the Blue and Red shows this year is a match for each featuring Gold wrestlers, where the winner gets promoted.  In addition, all the titles on all the brands are on the line!  Here we go!

ALWF Gold: TakeOver
Hosts: Dick Lane and Mike Hogewood

Our opening package sets up Bam Bam Bigelow and Dick Murdoch as two trains ready to collide… only to show the bridge the trains are on blowing up near the collision.  In retrospect, some foreshadowing we should’ve seen coming.

The Afterlife Wrestling Federation: A Primer

By Andy PG on 27th January 2019

So as I threatened tonight, I’m going to see if there’s any interest in this bad boy.  Don’t worry, it won’t be a weekly post — just every so often, like an Event Center or when there’s a major show.  (Next show is our own Rumble in 2-3 weeks.)

So let’s introduce you to: THE AFTERLIFE WRESTLING FEDERATION! (For over 100 years, the revolutionary force in Slam Bang Western Style Wrestling.)  WARNING: this post is long.  Click at your own risk.

The PG Era Rant: NWA BTW/WCCW Christmas Star Wars ’81

By Andy PG on 15th December 2018

Aww yeah, this is my jam! To be honest, I called dibs on this because, in an era where my friends were debating if Hogan and Piper could beat Flair and Harley, I was over in the corner watching WCCW on ESPN and saying Kerry Von Erich was better than all of them. Look, I was 6 at the time, okay? (Disclosure: I’m 38 now, so this show took place before I knew what wrestling was.)  It’s still a shame that the Kerry most people know was the shell of himself in the WWF from 1990-92, because if he’d stayed sober he’d have been a game-changer. Anyway, this is from 1981, so he’s just one of the brothers, but that doesn’t mean I’m not down for some World Class!

From Dallas, Texas, December 25, 1981, and technically promoted by NWA Big Time Wrestling. No word on attendance.  (“Here’s some money; go see a Star War.”)

Your host is Bill Mercer, and your ring announcer is Marc Lowrance. They’re like old friends to me.

NOVA Pro Wrestling: Paradise by the Dashboard Light

By Andy PG on 23rd February 2017

Hey, they were back in my neighborhood, so I stopped by. DVDVR already reviewed this show, but I was there so I wanted to join in. As a note, I am reviewing the DVD of the show, to make sure I didn’t miss anything when taking notes. This show is available on SmartMarkVideo, and I cannot recommend it highly enough – as you’ll see, holding the show on Black Friday allowed for an all-star cast to show up.

From Fairfax, VA.

Your hosts are Kevin Ford and Emil Jay.

Review of NOVA Pro Wrestling’s American Slang, July 1, 2016

By Andy PG on 3rd July 2016

So as I was performing in my second (third?) job as a hockey ref at the JCC of Northern Virginia on Wednesday (June 29), the security guard told me that there was going to be a big deal on Friday. Turns out there was a wrestling event that day. For geography’s sake, the JCCNV is within 2 miles of my house! Independent wrestling within 2 miles? Hell, I’d WALK to that!

Which I did. Because I don’t own a car.

But if I’m going to take in the joy of indy wrestling, all of you are going to enjoy it with me. So, after taking a couple days to celebrate the holiday with family, I’ve snuck out to type up the following. Now, it won’t be anywhere NEAR as detailed as my usual notes because I don’t have a computer in front of me at the event. However, I hope you enjoy it anyway.

From Fairfax, VA, NOVA Pro Wrestling presents American Slang!
