AAA Review – 07.18.26

AAA is on Youtube tonight from Arena Potosi in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The American announce team for tonight’s show consists of Corey Graves and John Bradshaw Layfield. Tonight is the go-home show for Verano de Escandalo, so let’s watch some lucha!

Then, Now, Forever…..TOGETHER

Entrances: AAA GM Rey Mysterio, and El Grande Americano and Andrea Bazarte.

Here’s Rey Mysterio out to make some announcements as Savio Vega joins the announce crew to help with translations. Mysterio will be joining Graves and JBL after his announcements. Mysterio has two issues to address and wants to start with asking the crowd for a show of hands if they’ve ever been fired from a job. Mysterio says he needs to fix an injustice and calls out Andrea Bazarte to join him in the ring. Bazarte enters the ring in an incredible dress and Mysterio apologizes on behalf of AAA for what happened in the run up to Mask vs Mask. Mysterio wants to offer her a new contract with a little bit more money attached than her last one. Mysterio wants Bazarte to sign and come back to the family, and Bazarte emphasizes how much she loves the history and pageantry of AAA. Bazarte says the AAA fans are the best fans in the world and accepts the new contract with a hug from Mysterio. Bazarte exits the ring and Mysterio continues on with his second issue which is the status of the Latin American Championship. El Hijo del Vikingo had to have surgery and is out indefinitely, so Mysterio proposes a series of triple threat matches with the winners advancing to a four corners match for the title at TripleMania. The matches are La Parka vs Mecha Wolf vs Dragon Lee, El Fiscal vs Cruz del Toro vs Psycho Clown, Omos vs Damian Priest vs Galeno del Mal, and for tonight’s card we will have the following triple threat:

AAA Latin American Championship Fatal Four-way Qualifier: El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Abismo Negro vs Texano Jr.

Negro wants to fight both DW3 and Texano, so they chop him out of the ring. There’s some grappling and it ends with a standoff before Abismo flies back in to clothesline DW3 and Texano down. DW3 gets dumped and Abismo goes to work on Texano. Abismo dumps Texano over and tries to use the ropes for leverage but he gets caught and DW3 fires up. Abismo goes low on DW3’s knee and tries to take his mask. DW3 flies back in and there’s a cover exchange. DW3 dumps both Abismo and Texano to the floor and then walks the ropes for a tope con hilo. DW3 dumps Abismo back in and covers him for two.

DW3 clobbers Abismo in the head and then hoists him up for a Falcon Arrow that gets two. Texano is back in and he chops away at DW3. Texano snapmares DW3 over for a huge kick to the back and then mashes him with an ushigoroshi. Absimo breaks up the cover at two. Abismo and Texano slap it out along the ropes and Texano gets dropped by an Abismo belly-to-back suplex. DW3 breaks up the cover at two. DW3 yanks up Abismo and they slug it out and DW3 ends it with a pump kick. Absimo yanks DW3 up but Texano breaks it up and sends DW3 to the floor. Texano slaps Abismo and then mounts him on a top turnbuckle. They slug it out and slip back down to the mat. Texano removes an elbow pad and mashes Abismo with a forearm. Texano goes up again and starts smashing Abismo with headbutts before crushing him with a superplex. DW3 flies in with a frog splash on top of Abismo and Texano barely breaks up the cover at two.

Texano gets dumped by DW3 and Abismo flies in to stack DW3 up for two. Abismo goes to DW3’s eyes and then pulls out some bras knucks. DW3 shoves Abismo away and he clocks a returning Texano with the knucks. Abismo celebrates and turns right into a DW3 monster right hand. DW3 yanks Abismo up for the Wagner Driver and that finishes things.

DW3 should have a shot to regain the Latin American title so this finish and booking decision makes a lot of sense. This was fine for what it was and I loved the sequence with the superplex and frog splash combo. Someone should absolutely steal that for a finish at some point. This four way at TripleMania should be great. 3.25*

Winner – El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. (Wagner Driver on Abismo Negro)

Here’s AAA Mixed Tag Team Champions Lola Vice and Mr. Iguana being confronted by La Hiedra and Laredo Kid. Hiedra promises that she and Laredo will be victorious tonight against Faby Apache and Joaquin Wilde and then are coming for the titles. Vice and Iguana seem very unimpressed by Hiedra as she and Laredo exit. Vice tells Iguana that Hiedra is still in love with him and leaves, as Iguana wonders if La Yesca can blame Hiedra. We take a break.

Los Psycho Circus gathered backstage and someone was watching on X. Noticeably absent: Pagano.

Lola Vice and Mr. Iguana make their way to ringside to observe the next match.

Joaquin Wilde and Faby Apache vs La Hiedra and Laredo Kid

Laredo starts with Wilde and Wilde hits an armdrag to send Laredo into a tag. Faby tags in and she and Hiedra lock up. Faby snaps off a running kick and then pounds away on Hiedra in a corner. Hiedra slips out and they slug each other down. Wilde flies in to prevent Laredo from helping and they both put on STF’s. Hiedra barely makes the ropes to break up the hold. She and Faby go to the floor and Hiedra hits a Hip Attack along the steps. Back in Faby grabs a roll up for two, and then they crash together with lariats. Wilde and Laredo tag in and Wilde spikes Laredo with a DDT. Laredo slaps Wilde in a corner and then mashes Wilde with a facebuster and a running shotgun dropkick. Laredo goes to top mount ground and pound. Laredo pushes Wilde to the heel corner and stomps on his head. Hiedra chokes Wilde from behind as Laredo distracts the ref. Laredo snaps off a brainbuster and covers Wilde for two.

Wilde fires up with some rights and Hiedra yanks the ropes down to cause him to tumble out. Laredo flies out for a right and then dumps Wilde back in. Laredo hits a Michinoku Driver and ascends for a twisting moonsault. Laredo tries it again and Wilde slips out. Wilde finally tags in Faby and Hiedra comes in as well. Faby hits a big boot and she ascends for a missile dropkick. Faby dumps a charging Laredo and Wilde ranas him off the apron to the floor. Faby ascends and hits a somersault senton on everyone. Faby runs Hiedra back in and hits a cross-body for two. Faby wants a full nelson but Hiedra elbows her way out of it tag in Laredo in. Wilde comes in and drops Laredo with a facebreaker for two.

There’s a slap battle and Laredo snaps off a superkick to end it. Laredo hits a running forearm and Hiedra gets a tag. Laredo DDT’s Wilde and then mashes him with a tope suicida. Hiedra gets caught by a Faby bridging backslide for two. Faby kicks Hiedra right on the top of the head but Laredo interferes when she tries to run the ropes to follow up. Hiedra uses the distraction to nail Faby with a stunner and that ends things.

Hiedra has been fairly obsessed with Iguana and Vice so this should set up nicely for Verano de Escandalo. This was fun and Faby can still really go. 3.5*

Winners – La Hiedra and Laredo Kid (Hiedra stunner on Faby)

Here’s a look at the ongoing saga with El Grande Americano and his new tormentors, Los Perros del Mal. EGA has an uneasy partnership with AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio developing and they managed to fight off Los Perros at the end of last week‘s episode. Mysterio issued a challenge for Verano de Escandalo and we’ll hear a response from Los Perros after a break.

Rey Mysterio is talking to the press and is excited for the beginning of Verano de Escandalo next week. Mysterio runs down some matches that will be happening. Mysterio sends good wishes to Octagon Jr who suffered a neck injury in Monterrey and will need some time away. Mysterio mentions that there are still tickets available for the TripleMania shows but there aren’t many left and people should get moving if they want to see those shows.

Here’s Los Perros del Mal (Daga, Bronco Nima, Angel and Berto, and Karmen Petrovic) out to join us with Rey Mysterio joining commentary at this point. Mysterio mentions that he thinks EGA should be very careful when considering teaming with Dominik Mysterio as JBL mentions that Dom comes from a long line of people you cannot trust. HARF. Daga says he’s heard the questions about what happened with Los Perros and instead of trying to gain social media fame, they just came back to be dangerous and deadly. Daga says that Los Perros weren’t born to go to war with Mexico, they were born to fix this business. Daga says they are back for that very purpose and dogs will always be dogs. Daga introduces Angel and Berto and says they should have whatever they desire. Daga says that Bronco Nima doesn’t ever have to ask for permission to destroy anything in his path. Daga then brings Petrovic to the front and says if anyone eyes her up they are screwed. Finally Daga says he is one of the chosen and the last son of Perro Aguayo Jr to take up the flag. Daga claims they didn’t come to ask for things, they came to become the nightmare to everyone in the locker room. Daga says they are the ones that make the rules and mentions wanting to see if Dominik Mysterio has the stones to face them, so he accepts the match for Verano de Escandalo. God forgives, Los Perros do not.

Here’s AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio out and he’s invited into the ring, but declines to first bring out El Grande Americano. They then march to the ring and as it turns out, Rayo and Bravo Americano are also out and standing on the opposite side of the ring. A Pier Six breaks out as the credits roll and we are out!

Another fine hour of lucha ending with a huge brawl to set up the high stakes match at Verano de Escandalo. Now, obviously, EGA and Dom have business to attend to at TripleMania so we’ll see how this match unfolds. This was a fun hour and set some things up very nicely for the two big cards coming our way. Whenever the Galeno-Priest-Omos match happens, it will be must-see television, friends.
