AAA Cruiserweight Championship Number One Contender Triple Threat Match: Dragon Lee vs Jack Cartwheel vs Mini Vikingo
They meet in the center of the ring and Lee blasts Vikingo down with a right. Lee blasts Cartwheel with a high boot and gets rolled up by Vikingo, but he escapes before a count can happen. Lee no-sells a Vikingo rana but eats an immediate Cartwheel superkick that sends Lee to the floor. Vikingo waffles Lee with a tope suicida and then Cartwheel does the same thing. Cartwheel and Vikingo square off for some acrobatics and Lee ends up yanking Vikingo out of the ring. Cartwheel follows with a Space Flying Tiger Drop (!) on Vikingo and Lee. Cartwheel runs Lee back in and ascends, but Lee slips away and dumps Cartwheel onto the turnbuckles. Lee superkicks Cartwheel in the face and then waffles him with a wrecking ball dropkick. Lee murders Cartwheel with a right cross and then mounts him on a top turnbuckle. Lee ascends but Vikingo launches himself up and crushes Lee with a Spanish Fly. Vikingo wallops Cartwheel with a roundhouse kick and follows with a huge Meteora. Vikingo decides to hit Lee with the same move but Lee has other ideas and crushes Vikingo with a superkick. Lee mounts Vikingo on a top turnbuckle and drops him down to a Tree of Woe position. Lee hits a double stomp as Cartwheel looms up from behind. Cartwheel hits a top rope-assisted slingshot splash and Lee breaks up his cover at one.
Lee tosses Vikingo to the floor and starts slugging it out with Cartwheel. Lee wins the skirmish and yanks Cartwheel up for a Styles Clash. Cartwheel fights his way out of it but gets dumped to the floor when he charges Lee. Lee wants to dive on Cartwheel but Vikingo trips him up and flies back in to launch his own torneo on a helpless Cartwheel. Lee flies in and utterly murders Vikingo with a dropkick that sends him back-first into the corner of the announce desk before flying over the entire table into the chairs at ringside. (This was absolutely ridiculous in real time. I have no idea how Vikingo gets up from this, legit.) Lee tosses Cartwheel back in and runs right into a Cartwheel standing Spanish Fly. Cartwheel covers and gets a LONG two. Cartwheel ascends and misses a Shooting Star Press before getting run over by a Lee elbow. Cartwheel rolls through a sunset flip attempt and gets two. Lee fires up with a snap German suplex and a superkick but Cartwheel immediately launches a Pele kick in response. Lee shakes it off and knees Cartwheel in the head before yanking him up for a sit-out Liger-bomb that gets two.
Lee pounds away in a corner and then lines up a charge. Cartwheel gets a boot up and comes off the second turnbuckle for a rana attempt. Lee catches him mid-air and pulls Cartwheel right into a Styles Clash. A recovered Vikingo ascends and crushes Lee with a Phoenix 630 splash as he’s covering Cartwheel. Vikingo lands on Cartwheel and the ref counts three.
I thought this ruled, I’ll be honest. It went at a pace that was fast but not frenetic, everyone was crisp, and there were some spectacular spots that got the crowd into it. I was shocked at the bump that Vikingo took on the Lee flying dropkick because it looked awful in real time, but good on him for clearly doing it safely. This was a lot of fun and continues the underdog Vikingo’s current winning streak. He gets a title match with Rey Fenix now! 3.75*
Winner AND NEW Number One Contender for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship – Mini Vikingo (Phoenix 630 splash)
Post-match sees Lee and Cartwheel show respect to the winner and each other.
Here’s El Grande Americano backstage with Rey Mysterio. Mysterio wants to make sure that EGA knows who he’s messing with when it comes to Los Perros del Mal who are some of the most ruthless bad-asses in lucha. They are coming after EGA because he’s the biggest dog in the yard and they want to mark their territory. Mysterio says EGA cannot fight them alone, and EGA says he knows about their legacy. EGA says let them come because he’s not taking a step back. EGA does realize he’s going to need help, and in walks Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio. Dom says Rey is weak and that’s why Los Perros have returned. Dom tells EGA he didn’t get involved in Mask vs Mask because he knew EGA was going to triumph and they would be having the biggest match of the year at TripleMania. Dom tells EGA that they are both targets of Los Perros and thinks they should watch each others backs so they can make it to TripleMania. EGA says he’ll believe it when he sees it.
Here’s Dorian Roldan walking in with Omos and chatting about El Hijo del Vikingo. They are approached by Mini Vikingo who chides Roldan about picking the wrong one for his faction. Omos shoves Vikingo away and Roldan tells him that Mini is clearly nuts.
Savio Vega has joined the commentary team to help with translation as Dorian Roldan and Omos make their way down to the ring. Graves mentions that there have been rumors circulating about Vikingo as Roldan and Omos enter between and over the ropes. Roldan tells Potosi that Vikingo did not want to come there but he is forced to because there’s a sad message to deliver. Due to negligence by Rey Mysterio, Vikingo has suffered a tear in one of his knees and will be having surgery and a very long recovery period. Roldan wants respect for Vikingo and the crowd doesn’t seem interested. Roldan blames Mysterio for sending Vikingo to Smackdown and NXT and costing him a lot of money by getting him injured. Roldan suggests he’s going to sue Rey Mysterio over this and a culero chant breaks out. Roldan says he’s announcing a new Latin American Champion, and shockingly it’s Omos. Roldan says if anyone has a problem with this they can come try to take the title from him. The lights go out and here’s Rey Mysterio entering to a huge pop. Mysterio pauses for a chant from the crowd and then tells Roldan that he offers his best to Vikingo before reminding Roldan about all the injuries he suffered over his career. Mysterio says it’s a rough business but you can’t change the rules. Mysterio says Roldan doesn’t have the right to just hand the title to Omos because that’s not how things work here. Mysterio orders Omos to give him the belt and Omos looms over top of Mysterio who tells him to do the right thing, or he’s going to be suspended indefinitely. Omos pushes the title into Mysterio’s chest and Mysterio declares the title vacant as of now. Next week there will be an announcement about how the new champion will be crowned. Mysterio tells Roldan if he wants to sue him he’ll see him in court. Mysterio leaves with the title and Roldan and Omos fume in the ring.
Here’s Damian Priest doing a talking head and mentioning that he heard Rey Mysterio’s news about the now-vacant Latin American Championship. Priest wants to be in on whatever happens next.
Rey Mysterio is doing his quick weekly press update and wants to make some announcements. Rey Fenix will defend his Cruiserweight Championship on the second Verano de Escandalos show. Flammer will defend her Reina de Reinas championship in a triple threat against La Catalina and Lady Shani. La Hiedra and Laredo Kid will take on Faby Apache and Joaquin Wilde in a number one contenders match for the Mixed Tag team titles. Mysterio says that Vikingo’s injury is sad but it opens up opportunities. Mysterio tells Andrea Bazarte that he’s sorry for how everything went and wants to invite her to next week’s show.
Money Machine (Garra de Oro and Colmillo de Plata) vs Noisy Boy and Epydemius Jr.
We’re gonna call him E-Jr. when he’s in because I’m not trying to type that name out every other line. It’s Noisy and Plata to start and Noisy works a wristlock. Plata escapes and tosses Noisy over with an armdrag. Noisy does some acrobatics and hits the superhero pose mid-ring so Plata claps for him while tagging in Oro. E-Jr tags in as well and walks right into an Oro headlock. Oro trucks E-Jr. down but he no-sells it and nips right up. E-Jr also hits some acrobatics into the superhero pose before snapping off a rope-assisted rana. Oro slips a charge and E-Jr does the same. E-Jr flies around and wallops Oro with a tornado DDT. E-Jr tags in Noisy and he and E-Jr hit a double neckbreaker. E-Jr flips Noisy onto Oro and gets two.
Plata tags in and he and Oro combine on a dropkick on Noisy. Oro tags back in and they hit conveyor belt forearms and a springboard splash. Oro covers Noisy and gets two. Oro clubbers away and tags in Plata. They truck Noisy down and then blast him with back elbows. They combine on high boots and elbow drops before Plata’s cover gets two. Plata walks into a high boot from Noisy who then slips behind Oro. Noisy sneaks through and tags in E-Jr. who crushes both Plata and Oro with a springboard torneo. E-Jr. hits a springboard armdrag on Oro and nails a charging Plata with an enziguri. E-Jr. hits a running forearm and tags in Noisy. Noisy snaps off a twisting rana on Plata as Oro gets dropped by E-Jr. Plata gets walloped by an E-Jr. torneo splash and Noisy follows with a 450 splash that gets two.
Noisy pulls Oro up but Oro slips behind. Noisy fires off a poison rana and Plata charges in to nail Noisy with a release German. E-Jr. and Plata crash together with elbows and everyone is down. All of a sudden, here’s Karmen Petrovic on the ramp and Los Perros hit the ring to attack everyone.
This was pretty fun until the no contest ending. It felt like 3*or so with the finish probably adding on if we had gotten one.
No winner – No contest after Los Perros del Mal attack the ring
Post-match sees Los Perros absolutely destroy everyone and literally strip Money Machine out of their clothes. Daga grabs a microphone and calls out El Grande Americano. Daga says if EGA isn’t alone, come on down and we’ll fix everything. Daga says if EGA doesn’t come out Money Machine will continue to get destroyed, and here he is.
EGA emerges with Rayo and Bravo Americano and a standoff happens before the fight breaks out. Bronco Nima destroys Rayo and Bravo on the floor while the rest attack EGA in the ring. Daga and Los Garza want EGA, so he takes off his suit jacket and rises to fight all three. The numbers overwhelm him quickly and here’s Dominik Mysterio with a chair as the ring clears of Los Perros. Mysterio tells Los Perros that his match at TripleMania with EGA means EGA’s business is now his business. Mysterio promises that he and EGA will tag to take on Los Perros. The credits roll with everyone yelling at each other. Mysterio offers a hand to EGA who takes it as they stare down Los Perros. We are out.
Another solid hour of work here. We got some clarity on the El Hijo del Vikingo situation and a new number one contender for Fenix’s cruiserweight title, and a big showdown with Los Perros and EGA/Dom to end the show. Good stuff all around and we’ll move on to week two from San Luis Potosi.
Thanks for reading and commenting. Enjoy your Sunday.
