Can-Am Connection/Demolition
By Scott Keith on 20 May 2025
Hi Scott,
Random question I've long been curious about but never thought to write about, but I'd be interested in your and the blog's opinions. In 87, the Can-Ams were crazy over, and it seemed inevitable that they'd get the tag titles and possibly a long reign to follow. Of course, we know what happened: Zenk left in the summer, they paired Tito with Martel and gave them the titles in an attempt to keep the magic the Can-Ams had, and it didn't work, and they were fed to the new juggernaut, Demolition at WrestleMania 4.
My question is this: in a world where Zenk doesn't leave and the Can-Ams get the titles as planned, was Demolition still inevitable? Did Demolition only get as hot as they did due to apathy towards Strike Force, or were they going to beat whatever pretty boy team was put in front of them regardless of who it was? Or might we have even had a situation like Warrior/Rude the following year where Demolition wins the titles at WM4, only for the Can-Ams to regain it at SummerSlam after chasing them all summer (and maybe both teams come out stronger for it)? I don't know why, but the Can-Ams have always been one of my biggest “What ifs?” in wrestling, so I am curious what you'd think.
They were very over but running with long term baby face tag champs was never how Vince rolled until, ironically, Demolition became that team. Demolition’s ascent was inevitable like Iron Man, baby, and the Can Ams would have likely fallen victim just like Strike Force did.
