Jerry Lawler back in the day

Hey Scott:
I've been watching more 80's Memphis on YouTube (tbh I could watch it all day) and I'm curious about one thing. What was Jerry Lawler's reputation during that time period? He almost always had a title and was obviously the main event draw for many years before he went to WWE. Was he like a Hulk Hogan who buried talent? Or was he respected by the majority of the wrestlers. I never have seen anyone who says much about Lawler during that period. Any help understanding is appreciated. Thanks.
He was universally respected and people loved working with him because it was an easy match and you made tons of money in comparison to every one else in Memphis. Never heard anyone say a bad word about Lawler in the 80s.
