WM 39 Revisited?
By Scott Keith on 18 April 2025
Hey Scott,
Hope you're holding up okay. Sincere condolences on your mom's passing.
On a happier topic, I've been watching the Wrestlemania YouTube channel with full matches, and I can't help but notice how heavily both Cena and Roman got booed for a LONG time. Like, I knew Cena had his haters, and I knew Roman wasn't over as a face, but I think I had forgotten just how bad it was.
Which brings me to Cody, and more specifically, the Wrestlemania 39 finish. While I still hate the finish itself – Solo jumping in the ring and hitting the Spike feels like a RAW finish, not the main event of the biggest show of the year – I can't help but wonder if waiting a year to pull the trigger has helped Cody in the long run. It feels like Cody's support is more organic and genuine than it would have been if WWE had tried to install him as the top guy one year after his return (especially after he'd spent so much of that year on the shelf). I mean, the fact that fans basically DEMANDED that he “finish the story” instead of being shunted over to fight Seth while they pushed Rock-Roman kind of suggests that he's succeeding where Roman failed (and even Cena didn't fully succeed).
Or am I completely wrong, and Cody would have been fine if he'd gone over at 39?
Thanks!
I know many have the opinion that the story was better with another year, but for me as a fan watching, who got invested into Cody’s rise to main guy and then got the rug pulled, it killed my interest in following further. I was ready for Roman’s reign to end and Cody to ascend and I don’t think any of the stories told in the intervening year would have been worse with Cody as champion.
