Samantha Irvin and the value of ring announcers
By Scott Keith on 21 October 2024
Samantha Irvin just announced she's leaving the WWE. While there's a bit of polarizing opinion about her, I think she's one of the greatest ring announcers of all time. If she winds up in AEW, working the same schedule as her husband, who could really blame her? Besides, you can say “Daniel Garcia” with the same exact cadence as “Chelsea Green.”
However, it does get me thinking as to the true impact of ring announcers. Even your greats, the Finks, the Capettas, etc…..they have an impact on the product for sure, but their leaving or jumping ship really just creates opportunities for someone else to jump in and add their own touch. Are they ever truly needle-moving losses? It doesn't hurt that the WWE has Alicia Taylor, with her own unique style, as well.
Inquiring minds want to know.
I don’t think it’s a game changer for either side. It’s a “nice to have” unless you have someone on the level of Finkel. And yeah, it makes an opportunity for someone else. Good on her, hope she gets that WBD cash!
