Golden Age of Promos

By Scott Keith on 6 July 2024

Hi Scott,

Which rough period of time would you say was the true golden age of the promo?

I could be biased, but I'm thinking 83 to 87: Flair, Dusty, Hogan, Piper and Savage are all in their primes (promo-wise). Then you have guys like Roberts, Dibiase and Hawk (a severely underrated promo, imo). And because the territories were not completely dead, a lot of great promos were keeping them afloat (Gino Hernandez, Jerry Lawler)

Some might say 97-2000, and while there were some true all-timers (Rock, Austin, McMahon, Foley), it was also an era defined more by coolness/attitude then actual promo ability (how many consecutive weeks did we see Hall, Nash, Steiner and Konnan practically sleepwalking through the same, lazy catchphrase-filled promo to GIANT reactions?). The skill level was heavily tilted towards the very top.

What say you?

It's been said that the golden age of wrestling is 8, as in whatever you were watching when you were 8 years old. For me it's 12 because I'll always take the Flairs and Pipers and Bobby Heenans over almost else besides Rock and Austin. So yeah, 1986. Final answer.
