Seven Days in Women’s Wrestling – January 28 to February 3, 2024

We did it, we made it through another week in the wrestling world. Granted, the wrestling side of the internet has absolutely imploded this weekend, but we’re here.

Let’s see what the women were up to last week!

Monday – WWE Monday Night Raw

Tonight’s Card: Two of six matches involved women this week, with the women getting approximately 12:00 of in-ring time. Eight women saw action in comparison to ten men.

Shayna Baszler & Zoey Stark defeated Chelsea Green & Piper Niven in 2:00. A quick win for Shayna & Zoey who jump to 4-0 in tag matches this year. Justice for Chelsea.

The Kabuki Warriors defeated Natalya & Tegan Nox in 9:50. Back and forth, but this one established the Warriors as champs but also forwards the new story of tension between Tegan and Nattie.

Other Developments: Becky Lynch tells us backstage she’s upset with her Rumble loss. Kayden Carter & Katana Chance are ready for their title rematch next week. Bayley is here to talk about the Rumble, but is interrupted by Rhea Ripley who in turn is beaten up by Nia Jax.

Final Score: We have the setup for Rhea/Nia in the Chamber and the women’s tag division rolling on, but it didn’t feel like QUITE enough tonight. As always, twelve minutes of action in a three hour show just isn’t enough. C-.

Tuesday – WWE NXT

Tonight’s Card: Three of six matches tonight involved women, combining for approximately 17:00 of in-ring action. Six women saw action in comparison to eight men.

Roxanne Perez defeated Tatum Paxley in 4:54. Joined in progress, so we lose about two minutes of the match. Lyra Valkyria is on commentary questioning why Tatum has her current obsession. Rox gets the win.

Lola Vice defeated Elektra Lopez in 3:32. We end the feud (I assume) as Elektra goes on to SmackDown and Lola gets focused on cashing in that title shot.

Arianna Grace defeats Fallon Henley in 8:41. A good stretch that leads to Jakara Jackson distracting the referee and Lash Legend kicking Henley, letting Arianna expertly make fantastic faces at the shock of winning. Henley looks to have a Meta-Four problem.

Other Developments: After a fantastic Chase U video package that used “Tell Me A Lie,” Jacy Jayne and Thea Hail announce they’ve saved the school by producing a Ladies of Chase U Calendar, which is a real thing that I spent my real life money on last night. We also get more women appearing on stage as a part of Chase U than appeared in total on some other programs. We get backstage spots with Tatum & Lyra and Arianna & Fallon. Brooks Jensen talks to Fallon elsewhere to reminisce on their own pairing, but she’s not up to talking. OTM and the D’Angelo Family have thoughts leading to their upcoming mixed tag match.

Final Score: As usual, there are lots of women in lots of spots on NXT. Numerous stories are spinning and most of them don’t even involve the title. The Chase U segment also spotlighted numerous women who are also getting their first merch check now (besides the cut going to save the school, of course). B.

Wednesday – AEW Dynamite

Tonight’s Card: One of six matches involved women for approximately 9:00 of in-ring time. Two women saw action in comparison to ten men.

Deonna Purrazzo defeated Taya Valkyrie in 8:51. A good match and my only wish, besides not having the commercials mid-match, was that Taya would be on AEW more often. She’s a great personality. Toni Storm was on commentary continuing her feuds with Deonna and Wendi Richter.

Other Developments: We get a backstage moment with Deonna, explaining her matching tattoo with Toni as mentioned previously.

Final Thoughts: For the 103rd straight week, only one match that involves exclusively women. Next week marks two weeks. The stark difference in this and, for example, Raw: we saw two women in-ring and not really any besides Renee anywhere else in the show. At least the match we had was good. C-.

Thursday – ROH on HonorClub

Tonight’s Card: Four of twelve matches involved women for approximately twelve minutes. Ten women saw action in comparison to 28 men.

Nyla Rose defeated Emmy Camacho in 1:32. In Emmy’s first “big three” match, she gets squashed. Which is right.

Billie Starkz defeated Killa Kate in 2:40. While a regular on the current version of WOW, we last saw Kate around here in 2021 losing to Abadon on Dark. An easy win for Billie.

Queen Aminata defeated Reiza Clark in 3:38. Reiza’s big three debut as well. Queen gets the squash win, which brings her to 3-0 for the year on ROH. Unfortunately, she’s 0-6 in AEW and it’s becoming a bigger and bigger hole to dig out of.

Red Velvet defeated Diamente, Kiera Hogan and Trish Adora in a Four Corner Survival Match in 4:02. Remember a few weeks ago when we had one of these and it lasted about three minutes? Well this one lasted four! It’s hard to spotlight four women when they are crammed into four minutes.

Other Developments: Nyla promises chaos next week in Athena’s hometown. Rachel Ellering and Layla Hirsch are ready for the Women’s TV Title tournament brackets to be released. Yeah, us too.

Final Score: While ten women in action is nice, cramming them all into twelve minutes – especially on a show that has no time limit – sucks. The four-way especially is rough since we just had one with no time. Spoiler alert: there’s another four-way next week. The build to the mysterious TV Title seems aimless as it’s just a road of squash matches and others building up loss records. This show needs someone who cares. D.

Thursday – TNA Impact

Tonight’s Card: Two of six matches involved women for approximately seven minutes. Six women saw action compared to ten men.

Decay defeated Mila Moore & Savannah Thorne in 2:44. Mila has a Dark loss to Willow Nightingale in her history while Thorne has one to Diamente. Simply a squash for the tag champs.

Masha Slamovich defeated Jody Threat in 4:14. This was set up earlier in the show and their partners, Killer Kelly and Dani Luna respectively, interfere in this sprint.

Other Developments: We take another look at Ash by Elegance. There’s a package on Jordynne Grace’s surprise trip to the Royal Rumble (I recommend the extended version on YouTube).

Final Score: Seven minutes isn’t enough for two matches, but I do appreciate that they are attempting to rebuild the tag division. C.

Thursday – WWE Main Event

Tonight’s Card: One of two matches involved women for approximately six minutes of in-ring time. Two women competed as did two men.

Xia Li defeated Gigi Dolin. I’m afraid Xia might have been relegated back here after the Becky and Lyra feuds both ended. It’s good to see Gigi here again and she’s ready for the main roster.

Final Score: Half and half. B.

Friday – AEW Rampage

Tonight’s Card: One of four matches involved women for approximately eight minutes of action. Two women saw matches compared to fourteen men.

Willow Nightingale defeated Queen Aminata in 7:57. Stokely Hathaway and Kris Statlander are with Willow. Commentary continues to talk about how many matches Queen has had this year, which would be great if this wasn’t the sixth she’s had and lost. You’ve gotta give her a win at some point.

Other Stories: The Outcasts interrupt a backstage segment with Willow and friends, setting up a match next week.

Final Score: The women are still here, though there isn’t much multi-story development. C.

Friday – NXT Level Up

Tonight’s Card: One of three matches involved women for approximately five minutes of action. Two women saw action compared to six men.

Blair Davenport defeated Carlee Bright in 5:07. This is Carlee’s second Level Up match in a row.

Final Score: The usual for Level Up. A-.

Friday – TNA Xplosion

Tonight’s Card: Two matches tonight and neither involved women. Four men saw action.

Final Score: Two weeks back and no sign of the fabled Knockouts division here. F.

Friday – WWE Friday Night SmackDown

Tonight’s Card: One of three matches involved women for approximately eight minutes. Two women saw action compared to ten men.

Tiffany Stratton defeated Michin in 7:45. This is our singles debut on the big stage for Tiffany, set up by her slapping Michin backstage. She looked good and Michin is a good dance partner for anybody.

Other Developments: Bayley overheads Damage CTRL mocking her backstage. We get a masterful in-ring segment with Bayley choosing her WrestleMania opponent. She emotionally asks the rest of the group (minus Dakota Kai) why they have acted how they have, getting attacked by Asuka and Kairi Sane and finally ending Bayley’s time in the group. Bayley sneaks a pipe in to even the odds and has a face off with Iyo Sky before declaring her as her Mania opponent. Just a perfect segment (that carries a LOT of weight in the grade) and Bayley is already a big fan favorite.

Elsewhere, Naomi and Tiffany both sign their SmackDown contracts. Jade Cargill also appears to talk to Nick Aldis about possibly signing. Bianca Belair talks about what she has to do to get a title shot at Mania. Zelina Vega and Elektra Lopez get into it. B-Fab appears to counteract Scarlett for Bobby Lashley and the Street Profits. And, you know, nothing else notable that would blow up the entire Blog of Doom for a week happened on this show.

Final Score: The masterful Damage CTRL segment, a good Tiffy intro match and women woven through the show and matches elsewhere is a good, good show. A-.

Saturday – AEW Collision

Tonight’s Card: Two of six matches involved women for approximately twelve minutes of in-ring action. Four women saw action compared to thirteen men.

Serena Deeb defeated Queen Aminata in 10:01. A nice lengthy match for the women. It’s good to have Serena back but again, Aminata can only lose so many times before it stops meaning anything.

Red Velvet defeated Vertvixen in 2:19. A squash for Velvet to build her up for her match against Toni Storm next week on Dynamite which, let’s be real, she’s not going to win.

Other Developments: Toni Storm has thoughts!

Final Score: I got tagged several times on Twitter with “two women’s matches!” That’s good BUT their time combined was shorter than all but one of the men’s matches (the Hook squash). C.

This Week’s Tallies:

WWE/NXT – Over 8.5 hours of TV, eight matches for a total of 48 minutes of in-ring action. Twenty different women saw in-ring action.

AEW/ROH – Over 7 hours of TV, eight matches for a total of 41 minutes of in-ring action. Fifteen different women saw in-ring time, with Queen Aminata wrestling three times this week and Red Velvet wrestling twice.

TNA – Over 2.5 hours of TV, two matches for a total of seven minutes of action. Six women saw in-ring time this week.
