By Kat Bourne on 25 November 2023
Welcome back to our run through of WWE’s Confidential magazine-format series from 2002.
Let’s see what was big news back then!
Tonight, the troubled life of Davey Boy Smith! Who is the real Shawn Michaels? For Matthew Hyson, some things never change.
He’s Mean Gene Okerlund and this is WWE Confidential. Thank you for making last week’s premiere a rousing applause. We’ll continue our expose on Shawn Michaels later, but first…
The career and life of Davey Boy Smith. Controversy, questions, and accusations surround his death. Davey’s toughest battles were with personal demons. You’ll see inserts with Jim Ross interviewing Davey and Diana Smith for the first time.
Diana Hart Smith gives us the basics of meeting Davey. William Regal calls the British Bulldogs the best tag team of all time, and says Bulldog himself was a huge star. Howard Finkel calls him a piston, while Brooklyn Brawler reminisces on the never ending suplex.
Bulldog says he was nervous at SummerSlam 1992. We see highlights of the classic match. Undertaker says it was a tremendous rush for Bulldog.
Diane describes him as a big-hearted person while Regal calls him a prankster, telling how Bulldog would pee into Chris Champion’s hat. Undertaker always blamed Bulldog on stealing his towel.
Still to come, the turbulent career of the Bulldog.
When we see our favorite superstars on TV, we can’t imagine them when they weren’t famous. Mean Gene has a new feature tonight – Before They Were Superstars.
Sue Hyson says she hoped for a tomboy and that her son, Spike Dudley, was the easiest baby to take care of. Spike says he got to hang around with the girls by his parents throwing rocks in the water. Spike says he got picked on but it was fun being thrown around by the older kids. Spike played football though he did not get a NFL career.
Still to come, Shawn Michaels goes DX.
Flashback to 1984 and Gene interviewing new WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan. Hulkamania’s running world wide and it just turns him on, fellas.
Gene can’t believe that Hulkamania is still running wild and says you’d think there would be shots for it by now.
Hulk Hogan introduces us to Chris Sader, Hulkamaniac. They first met when Chris was three, and he has been a Hulkamaniac for every since, brother. Hulk visited to actually see all the stuff he had. Hulk says they’ve become friends, and Chris was a registered nurse that helped when Hulk’s dad passed.
This leads Gene Mean into videos of other fans doing impersonations and none of them are good.
Still to come, who’s the sexiest male superstar?
Just who is the man behind Shawn Michaels? Vince says he pushes the envelope but wants to be the best. Shawn says DX was the beginning of selling “attitude.” He says he probably went too far sometimes and upset his mom.
The backdrop on the casket wrecked him, and two days later he couldn’t move in his bed. We see Shawn struggling through the Mania match with Stone Cold. Shawn says he was aware of the pain in this match. Stone Cold wins and the Austin era begins, which Shawn felt was the end.
We see family man Shawn with his wife and son and saying accepting the Lord is how he’s finally where he’s wanted to be. Vince says Shawn is in control of his demons but somewhere in there he would love to see HBK one more time. Shawn says HBK is dead and he’s not coming back.
When we come back, the dark side of the Davey story.
Davey Boy had it all: when did it start to unravel? This August 1999 interview may have answers. Bulldog mentions the Fall Brawl ring had a trap door when he hit ring and that’s where it started. He was put on morphine and painkillers. Diana was finding painkillers and morphine everywhere hidden around. Davey says she took an overdose of pills – 100 Xanax – and told him this is what you do to us daily. Davey was so out of it he couldn’t help, so she called 911 for help.
She woke up four times later and died twice on the way. That told Davey it was time for rehab. He did seven weeks to clean out, but in the fifth week it was pain. Davey’s sister and mom died, which let to easing back pain medicine. They did a MRI and noted a fractured spine and a Staph infection and could die. While in the hospital, Diana brought him a FedEx from WCW that was for his release.
A bunch of wrestlers called and came saw Bulldog, and he went in McMahon-led rehab and police-led rehab. Regal tells the story of going to visit him and him being out of it and how it was a hard last time to see him. Taker says he never looked the same.
Davey and Diana split up but found their way back together in the last few months before his passing. Taker remembers him for enjoying life and being one of the all-time greats.
Mean Gene reminds us that last week, Ivory brought up the idea of breast implants. This week, the sexiest male superstars of them all. They all say The Rock. Jacqueline says Kurt Angle has a nice butt. “A big, round hard butt.” Someone says Ron Simmons has junk in his trunk. Torrie says Billie Kidman, Lita says Matt Hardy. Ivory talks about “that little Randy Orton, he’s brand new.” Gene says this was shot before he made his return.
Next week, behind the scenes of the Tough Enough season two finale. Can’t wait!
