Why is AEW so obsessed with tournaments?

My interest in AEW was already on the fritz as it was, and now there’s an obscenely long tournament?! Next, we’ll get another title. I…just don’t get it. What is the attraction supposed to be here?

It’s not like AEW doesn’t typically focus on the in-ring already. There’s also already the Owen Hart tournament every year.

I hate to be overly cynical about a company I’ve often enjoyed, but this seems like lazy booking where you can use a tournament to get away with cold matches that don’t have a storyline reason for happening.

I think it was just that Bryan wanted to do a G1 before he retired and couldn’t take the month away from his family, so Tony brought the G1 to him.
