Wrestling Growth

By Scott Keith on 22 October 2023

Hey Scott,

A thing I've been hearing a lot recently is fans being concerned about how much a wrestling promotion can 'grow'. Mostly in terms of AEW but I see it in other places as well. The idea that a wrestling company isn't truly successful unless it's in a position to grow its audience year after year.

And well, isn't that ridiculous? WWE, the biggest, most successful, most profitable, most intertwined with pro wrestling promotion in the world is not growing in the way that people expect promotions to grow. It just seems an entirely in bad faith argument to criticize a company for something that isn't happening for any company.

AEW has flaws, it has plenty of flaws, but to bring up concerns about corporate profits that mean nothing to any of us is just goofy. AEW is never gonna get 2 million viewers for Dynamite, and that's okay.
I think a lot of it is frustration from fans because it looked like they MIGHT go that far and then ran into what every other promotion always runs into.
