Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper are doing commentary, taped from Orlando, Florida.
Opening Contest: The British Bulldog (7-0) pins Cliff Sheats after the running powerslam at 2:03:
Sheats was a Florida independent wrestler who started wrestling in the 1980s for Dusty Rhodes’ Professional Wrestling Federation. He also did some television jobs for WCW talent in the early 1990s.
In the split screen, the Warlord and Slick tell the Bulldog that he is going to fail to escape the full nelson at WrestleMania. The smaller Sheats is no match for the Bulldog’s power, going down to the running powerslam.
Gene Okerlund’s Update segment hypes the Intercontinental title match between Mr. Perfect and the Big Bossman at WrestleMania VII. Perfect and Heenan tell the Bossman that he is going to find out why Mr. Perfect is perfect.
The Texas Tornado (6-0) pins Pez Whatley after the discus punch at 1:54:
The Tornado has a nice line in his insert promo, telling Dino Bravo that when he spins, he wins. After taking a few powders, Whatley manages to corner the Tornado but he eats a lot of punches, includes two discus punches and that puts him down for the count.
WrestleMania VII promos with Sean Mooney! The Barbarian, Haku, and Bobby Heenan warn the Rockers that they are going to tear them apart. The Rockers rebut that Greenpeace is getting worried because they are prepared to chop down two of the tallest trees in the WWF. The Nasty Boys and Jimmy Hart tell the Hart Foundation that they have better prepare to have a lot of nasty rammed down their throats.
The Nasty Boys (w/Jimmy Hart) (5-0) defeat Brian Costello & Terry Davis when Jerry Sags pins Davis after the Trip to Nastyville at 2:46:
McMahon still has a tough time with Jerry Sags’ name, wanting to refer to him as “Skags.” The Nasties work this match with less energy than their previous squashes, but it ends the same way as the jobbers lose to the Trip to Nastyville.
Okerlund interviews Hulk Hogan, who hypes his American credentials even though the Persian Gulf War is over.
Rick Martel’s squash from Prime Time Wrestling airs.
More WrestleMania promos with Mooney! Earthquake and Jimmy Hart tell Greg Valentine that he made a mistake messing with them. Earthquake reminds Valentine that he will put him on the shelf like he did Hulk Hogan last year. The Legion of Doom argue that Power & Glory want nothing to do with them at WrestleMania. They add that they hate Paul Roma’s hair and the way Hercules uses his chain.
Okerlund does the WrestleMania VII Report. WWF Champion Sergeant Slaughter and General Adnan recap the recent attacks that they have made against Hulkamania by burning posters and shirts. If Slaughter kept burning Hogan merchandise all the way to WrestleMania, that could have been entertaining. Slaughter reminds Hogan that Hogan has to pin or submit him to become champion, which is something that he does not think Hogan can do. Randy Savage and Sensational Sherri remind the Ultimate Warrior that what goes up must come down and that the Warrior was only keeping Savage’s belt warm and was never a legitimate champion. The Warrior repeats his promo bits about having a piece of Savage’s crystal kept in his head after The Royal Rumble. There is also a recap of the Queen Elizabeth impersonator being hauled away by Scotland Yard on Prime Time Wrestling. And Regis Philbin says his broadcasting skills will be put to the test at WrestleMania, while Alex Trebek is excited to be a guest ring announcer. Willie Nelson tells fans that he will see them at the show.
The Undertaker (w/Paul Bearer) (8-0) defeats Pat Armstrong with the Tombstone at 2:29:
Armstrong decides to take the fight to the Undertaker, an approach no one has tried yet, but it fails miserably when the Undertaker cuts off Armstrong’s offense with a chokeslam. The Undertaker and Bearer do an insert promo that they will make a believer out of fans when they crush Jimmy Snuka at WrestleMania. Mark Calaway is starting to work at a more deliberate speed, continuing to make adjustments to the gimmick as he puts more matches under his belt. After the bell, the Undertaker pours dirt on Armstrong.
A final round of WrestleMania promos with Mooney! Tito Santana says he is in the elite class of the WWF and is not going to be kept off of future WrestleMania cards by the Mountie. The Mountie rebuts that justice will prevail at WrestleMania when he puts away Santana for good. He ends the promo with Santana’s “Arriba!” The Big Bossman tells Mr. Perfect and Bobby Heenan that they will not survive WrestleMania.
Tune in next week to see Earthquake, Ted DiBiase, and the Legion of Doom in action! Also, the Ultimate Warrior will appear for a special interview!
The Last Word: There was too much talking on this show and not enough action, made especially problematic by lots of wrestlers running out of promo material for their WrestleMania matches and settling for generic comments. At least the celebrities are excited to be on the card as Regis Philbin, Alex Trebek, and Willie Nelson provided fun comments about their participation.
