Hey Scott,
So, Stardom has been the talk of the town in the last week, and I want to add my own perspective as this. As a fan of Stardom, I should feel joy that it is being acknowledged as the premier women's wrestling promotion in the world, but instead I am met with frustration and dismay about the dialogue around Stardom, and where I feel this conversation will go. Stardom being acknowledged is great, and I firmly believe the recent talking heads complimenting Stardom are sincere in their appreciation of the promotion, the way they go about that appreciation is, to me, bad.
Dave Meltzer I think deserves credit for mentioning Stardom's name in this women's wrestling situation, but he didn't bring it up totally sincerely, he brought it up unbidden in another conversation between a fan and a wrestler. Stardom wasn't brought up so Dave could promote wrestling he liked, he used it to zing somebody about wrestling taste. Next we had the Disco situation, and again I do believe that Lance, Kenny, and all the others involved are fans of Stardom…but the way they used their fandom wasn't to really promote it, it was to denigrate Disco. And then in that godawful recent post, we saw Stardom being used as some sort of pinnacle of Very Serious Wrestling as opposed to what World Wonder Stardom actually is.
Stardom is a well booked promotion full of great wrestling and awesome personalities, it also has flaws, it is a real wrestling company with its own problems and quirks and foibles, and deserves to be talked about it, bringing it up JUST to demean another talent or disparage a company is how you develop backlash and is insulting to the company you're attempting to compliment!
TL:DR don't just mention Stardom when you wanna put somebody down, talk about it like a real promotion.
Thanks,
Do we even talk it about at all? I don’t feel like we do.
