Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan are in the studio for this evening’s telecast, two weeks away from SummerSlam.
Opening Contest: Randy Savage (w/Sensational Sherri) (4-2) pins Jim Evans after the flying elbow drop at 1:21:
A few fans at ringside have a big Sherri poster, which they show to the camera as Savage makes his entrance. Sherri also has Savage’s wrestling buddy with her, holding onto it throughout the squash. Savage makes quick work of Evans and Sherri beats on him with the Savage doll afterward as McMahon screams that those toys are meant for children, not adults.
A replay of Gene Okerlund’s interview with Bad News Brown on Wrestling Challenge airs.
An old Bushwhackers squash that aired on Prime Time Wrestling on June 18 is shown.
Heenan uses the Hasbro toys to show that Hulk Hogan’s best strategy at SummerSlam is to run under the ring.
Okerlund does the SummerSlam Report.
Power & Glory (w/Slick) (4-0) defeat Scott Colton & Rick Rice when Paul Roma pins Colton after the Powerplex at 2:08:
In the split screen, the Rockers promise to shut Power & Glory up at SummerSlam. The crowd barely reacts to the action since this was filmed near the end of a Wrestling Challenge taping. Roma has to make an adjustment in the air for the finish as he misjudges where Colton is going to be placed after the Hercules superplex.
Heenan argues that Sapphire’s benefactor is not real because no one could love her.
The Rockers (14-3-1) defeat Tom Bennett & Black Bart when Shawn Michaels pins Bennett after a double flying fist drop at 2:01:
The Rockers frustrate Bart with their speed and blitz Bennett with a Michaels spinning elbow off the second rope, Marty Jannetty’s Rocker Dropper, and the double flying fist drop. The Rocker Dropper is a devastating move but looks dangerous because the guys taking it do not always know how to bump. In this case, Bennett ends up turning his head as he is planted into the canvas rather than taking the bump chest-first.
Promo time with Sean Mooney! Power & Glory and Slick do another promo against the Rockers, saying only the strong will survive at SummerSlam. Paul Roma has a weird line about how the Rockers will be forced to worship Power & Glory after the match. The Hart Foundation talk about how they have waited three years to get the WWF Tag Team Championship back, a drought that will end at the pay-per-view.
The Barbarian (w/Bobby Heenan) (13-0) pins Warren Bianchi after the flying clothesline at 1:26:
As the Barbarian chokes away, Heenan does a promo that hypes the Barbarian’s strength. Bianchi forgets that the flying clothesline is the Barbarian’s finishing move and starts getting up. He quickly realizes his error, so he turns over and lays down so the Barbarian can pin him.
Okerlund does the Update segment that recaps Nikolai Volkoff’s babyface turn.
Ted DiBiase’s match with Jim Brunzell on Superstars is shown.
A replay of Sergeant Slaughter’s latest vignette airs.
Bad News Brown (19-0-1) pins Jim Powers after the Ghetto Blaster at 3:20:
Brown tries to do his usual ambush before the bell, but Powers is ready, knocking Brown down with a dropkick. The Harlem native quickly regroups, though, and pounds away as Jake Roberts appears in the split screen and questions what Brown will do when he asks for more at SummerSlam. Brown swallows up Powers with chokes and strikes, finally winning with the Ghetto Blaster in a match that went too long.
A replay of WWF Champion the Ultimate Warrior appearing on the Brother Love Show on Superstars is shown.
The Hart Foundation (14-0-1) defeat Al Burke & Tom Stone when Bret Hart pins Stone after the Hart Attack at 1:41:
The Foundation do an insert promo about how they do not care which members of Demolition wrestle at SummerSlam so long as Demolition brings the tag team title belts. Bret wrestles most of the squash, excellently executing Stone with some fists, elbows, and an atomic drop to set up the Hart Attack.
Mr. Perfect’s squash win on Superstars airs, along with the Texas Tornado’s post-match challenge. Heenan warns the Tornado that he is not going to make a name for himself at the Perfect’s expense.
More promos with Mooney! Tito Santana says fans keep asking him if he is done with Rick Martel, and he screams that he is not, which is why he signed to face Martel at SummerSlam. Dusty Rhodes promises to get revenge for the American people against Randy Savage.
The Texas Tornado’s squash win a few weeks ago on Wrestling Challenge against the Brooklyn Brawler airs. Afterward, Heenan yells about how he is not going to talk about the Tornado and give him free exposure.
A replay of the Ultimate Warrior-Rick Rude match on Saturday Night’s Main Event is shown. Even though he promised to be around afterward to answer all questions, Heenan is absent when the show goes back to the studio. So Monsoon wraps up.
The Last Word: There were not any new feature matches, so the show kept the SummerSlam build going, giving exposure to most of the big acts and angles. It is time for a lot of the spring and summer angles like Dusty Rhodes-Randy Savage and Hart Foundation-Demolition to wrap up because much of the company’s booking appears to be on a hamster wheel.
Up Next: WWF Superstars for August 18!
