WWF 1984
By Scott Keith on 8th August 2021
I’m watching 1984 WWF in chronological order (I recently stumbled upon a collection of old footage) and it’s a fascinating year for obvious reasons (i.e. the birth of Hulkamania, the Coconut incident, Slaughter vs. Sheik, Santana vs. Valentine, TNT, Lauper-Albano
saga, WWF on TBS, etc.).
saga, WWF on TBS, etc.).
I was born in 1983 so most of my memories of that year had been from watching Coliseum video tapes. However, there’s so much more to that year that I’m finally discovering:
- Backlund originally being advertised as the challenger for the Iron Sheik’s title on January 23, 1984…
- Piper coming into the WWF as a manager before transitioning to wrestling
- Mean Gene as a color commentator (with Vince) on Championship Wrestling before settling into being a full-time interviewer
- The Paul Orndorff vs. Brian Blair mini feud that makes me appreciate Orndorff and especially Blair’s skills so much more
- The Fabulous Freebirds wrestling a few shows in the summer of 84
- The Spoiler going “old school” years before the Undertake ever did
- Snuka getting a (rare) clean victory over Piper in a Fijian strap match (which actually was featured on a coliseum video)
- And the list goes on.
Just wanted to share some of these highlights and see if old school blog of doomers might have additional memories of their own to share. 🙂
It really highlights the major hole in the WWE Network, as there's almost nothing from that era on there and it's one of the most important eras in the history of the promotion! I sadly was still a couple of years away from full-on fandom at that point, but I really wish they'd add some Championship Wrestling so we could relive it properly.
