What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – February 17, 1990

Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura are doing commentary and they are doing the second episode from Miami, Florida.

Opening Contest: The Bushwhackers (5-0) defeat Spike Jones & Pat Rose when Luke pins Rose after a double stomachbreaker at 2:30:

Jones was familiar to television audiences as a jobber for the AWA before he appeared in the same role on WWF television.

Before the match, the Bolsheviks do a split screen promo threatening to crush the Bushwhackers. The Bushwhackers show some good fire in the squash, using crisp strikes before flooring Rose with the Battering Ram and double stomachbreaker.

The Update segment with Gene Okerlund features WrestleMania VI promos. WWF Champion Hulk Hogan says that his fans are anxious about the Ultimate Challenge and WrestleMania VI will resolve them. Hogan’s promo carries a religious fervor as he implies that the Warrior is a supernatural devil, one that he says he is willing to put the WWF title on the line against. The Warrior responds by likening he and Hogan to immortals that are willing to risk their status in a battle with each other. His promo is darker in tone, subtly making the Warrior come off as a heel.

Brutus Beefcake (3-0-1) beats Rick Rude (w/Bobby Heenan) (3-0-1) via disqualification when Mr. Perfect and the Genius interfere at 3:16:

As Beefcake and Rude do a long feeling out period, Perfect and the Genius appear in the split screen and Perfect tells Beefcake that he will never get a chance to cut the Genius’ hair again. Beefcake and Rude exchange some fists and then Perfect and the Genius run-in to cause the disqualification. Rating: ¼*

After the bell, Beefcake takes a beating from Rude, Perfect, and the Genius until he grabs his hedge clippers, and the heels make a quick getaway to the locker room.

Tito Santana (2-2) pins the Brooklyn Brawler (1-2) after a flying forearm at 1:47:

McMahon and Ventura spend more time talking about next week’s The Main Event and Mike Tyson’s appearance than this match, where Tito eats a few punches before going under a clothesline and rebounding off the ropes with the flying forearm.

Brother Love hosts his talking segment, welcoming Akeem and Slick as his guests. Slick issues a challenge to the Big Bossman to face his former tag team partner in the ring. Akeem adds on that he was the real star of the Twin Towers and he will make the Bossman pay the price for ditching Slick. Ted DiBiase and Virgil interrupt, with DiBiase telling Slick that handsome rewards await he and Akeem if they take out the Bossman.

Okerlund provides the WrestleMania VI Report. New matches announced include a mixed tag team match between Dusty Rhodes and Sapphire against Randy Savage and Sensational Sherri, Roddy Piper against Bad News Brown, and WWF Tag Team Champions the Colossal Connection defending their titles against Demolition.

The Rockers (3-0) defeat Pez Whatley & Alan Martin when Shawn Michaels pins Martin after a double flying fist drop at 2:04:

As the Rockers take turns dismantling Martin, the Powers of Pain and Mr. Fuji appear in the split screen vowing to use their power to destroy them. Jannetty powerslams Martin and that sets up the Rockers finishing double flying fist drop.

Randy Savage and Sensational Sherri put over how he is going to defeat WWF Champion Hulk Hogan on The Main Event to be a two-time champion. Savage warns Mike Tyson that if he does not call the match correctly he is going to feel his wrath. Hogan rebuts that this will be the final encounter between the Mega Powers and he also warns Tyson to call the match down the middle. Tyson gets a quick, lazy bit of his own about how the match he is going to referee is the real deal.

Tune in next week to see Hacksaw Jim Duggan face the Honky Tonk Man! Also, WWF President Jack Tunney will announce which belt will be on the line in the WrestleMania VI main event!

The Last Word: Even though Mike Tyson recently lost the heavyweight title and there were rumors he was not going to be on The Main Event, this show still sold him as making an appearance there in six days. This show continued the WrestleMania VI build by announcing new matches, one of which is bound to be Mr. Perfect against Brutus Beefcake since Beefcake will want revenge from Perfect’s sneak attacks going back to The Royal Rumble. The Twin Towers also appear on a collision course, which is a good way to keep the Big Bossman busy until Ted DiBiase wraps up his feud with Jake Roberts.
