Henry Godwinn vs. Bret Hart
Ross tells us that Owen Hart will be providing commentary on the Superstar Line during the PPV. Godwinn wins a slugfest in the corner. Bret catches Godwinn with a boot to the face but then gets knocked down with a shoulder block. Godwinn roughs up Bret then catches him in a bearhug. Bret bites his way out but Godwinn starts hammering away. Bret comes back with a crossbody for two but is shoved outside during the kickout. Bret trips up Godwinn from the outside and rams his leg into the post. Bret goes back inside and works over the leg as Ross talks about Lawler colluding with Hakushi & Owen for the PPV since Lawler is so confident about winning the match. Godwinn fights back then misses a knee drop but able to avoid a charge in the corner as Bret’s shoulder rams into the post and face nearly in the slop bucket. Godwinn stomps away then hits a shoulderbreaker for a two count. Godwinn then hits an armbreaker and drops an elbow for another two count. Godwinn works an armbar on the mat for a bit but Bret fights out. Godwinn decks Bret with an elbow smash then hits a wheelbarrow slam for another two count. Godwinn applies another armbar as we head to break then the action returns with a double clothesline as both men are down. Godwinn charges for a clothesline bur Bret back drops him over the floor then flies out with a pescado and starts hammering away. Bret takes Godwinn back inside and hits his trademark moves until Godwinn counters a running bulldog by shoving Bret into the corner. Godwinn hits another shoulderbreaker then heads to the middle rope and comes off but Bret got his foot up as both men are down. Pettengill wonders why Bret took this match since he is facing Lawler tonight but Ross notes Bret is a competitor that always settles his issues in the ring then after a float over in the corner, Bret small packages Godwinn for the win (12:00) ***1/4. Ross wants to know how much this win took out of Bret for tonight’s match as the announcers plug the PPV as the show goes off the air.
Thoughts: Good match. It was a given Bret got his win over Godwinn as the latter continues his role of putting over the stars on TV. They sold it on commentary as Bret taking a match like this the day of the PPV as a bad idea and it made sense but lets see if this gets mentioned on the PPV itself.
Final Thoughts: A really good featured match the day of the PPV. However, this would the be end of the weekly exclusive featured match era of “Action Zone.” So, I will recap the next few then after that when there is exclusive content. And again, more news about the change to WWF TV soon enough which will see me really breeze through the end of the year and 1996 as long as nothing happens that prevents me from the recaps.
