Explain the G1 to me

I know it’s a MASSIVE tournament where great matches generally occur, but it seems like a bit of an anachronism, at first glance. Does anyone need this much wrestling? Seems like the event made more sense before the proliferation of TV/streaming, but perhaps I’m missing something.
Educate me.
The Japanese love tournaments, and tradition, and guys proving that they do a billion matches in a two month period. Also, a lot of freaky sex stuff, but that's not really related.
