WWF Wrestling Challenge – May 30th, 1993

By Brian Bayless on 3 March 2019

May 30, 1993

From the Exposition Building in Portland, ME

Your hosts are Jim Ross and Bobby Heenan

The show starts off with the end to last week’s Crush vs. Shawn Michaels match from “Superstars.”

Crush vs. Chris Duffy

Crush tosses Duffy around as the announcers talk about how he wanted to be in the King of the Ring Tournamnet. Crush continues to overpower Duffy as the announcers put over his strength then Crush press slams Duffy before the head vice gets the win (2:33).

Thoughts: They are using the fact Crush is pissed over not getting a shot in the King of the Ring Tournament as motivation for him in his KotR match against Shawn Michaels.

The Headshrinkers w/ Afa vs. Ross Greenberg & Jay Sledge

The Headshrinkers pancake Sledge as Heenan says they do not fear anyone or anything. The Headshrinkers continue to beat down Sledge before tossing him over to his partner. They now destroy Greenberg as Heenan does his running bit about Ross’s pickup truck. Heenan then says Oklahoma is just a suburb of Texas as the Headshrinkers stay in control before Fatu puts Greenberg away with a flying splash (3:38).

Thoughts: Heenan ragging on Ross was funny as Heenan has been making the most of what Ross has been given him on commentary. The Headshrinkers get another win to continue their build as a badass tag team.

The Razor Ramon and Kid segments from this weeks “Superstars” airs where Kid declines Razor’s $2,500 offer for a rematch.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. LA Gore

Heenan promises that we will hear from Razor on RAW this coming Monday night. Gore bails after getting clotheslined a few times then the crowd starts up a USA chant. Duggan heads out and beats down Gore while calling out Yokozuna. Duggan starts up another USA chant and stays in control until he uses the Three Point Stance for the win (2:44).

Thoughts: Another win for Duggan as his house show program against Yokozuna was continuing.

King’s Court with guest Luna Vachon. Lawler rags on the ugly women in the crowd but how none of them are uglier than Sherri. Luna tells Sherri when she is done with her no one will call her sensational or even call her at all before Lawler tells her the difference between Sherri and garbage is that garbage gets picked up once in a while and the segment ends with both laughing. Still not great but better than last week’s guests of Whippleman & Gonzalez.

We are once again shown the reading of the “No Hope with Dope” essay.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Jason Knight

Ross plugs the Adam Bomb vs. Virgil match that will take place later on in the show. Bigelow beats on Knight as the announcers talk about the Bigelow/Tatanka feud. The camera focuses on the plastic bag that contains Tatanka’s hair as Bigelow stays in control before using a flying headbutt for the win (2:14).

Thoughts: They are back to the hyping up the Tatanka/Bigelow feud which has not been featured as much after kicking off a few weeks ago.

King of the Ring Report

Virgil vs. Adam Bomb w/ Johnny Polo

Ross heard that Polo is a rich brat as Heenan says he does come from a lot of money. Bomb runs over Virgil but gets taken down with a hip toss. Virgil then hits a dropkick and works a side headlock until Bomb tosses him away. Virgil catches Bomb with a drop toe hold then works the arm as the camera zooms in on Polo, who says that Bomb is “total destruction.” Heenan then says he should go out with Polo one night and invites Ross, who declines, as Bomb ducks a crossbody before using the powerbomb for the win (2:22) *.

Thoughts: Not much of a match but the way the line about going out with Polo was delivered seemed like an inside dig at Polo’s well documented wild nights out while in the WWF, usually with Shane McMahon. Bomb looked pretty good in his debut match I thought but seems has seemed less impressive every time out since.

Another ad for the WWF Royal Rumble game for Super Nintendo.

Next week in action are the Steiner Brothers, Shawn Michaels, Adam Bomb, Mr. Perfect, and Doink the Clown. Plus, Yokozuna & Mr. Fuji as guests on the “King’s Court.”

Final Thoughts: Not much this week as the key segments were already seen on Superstars and the King’s Court segment and what I guess was a featured match did not last long at all as the PPV is now just two weeks away.
