The Non-Invaders

By Scott Keith on 2 March 2018

Scott,

What precisely was the deal with the top WCW stars whose contracts Vince didn't take up in 2001?

Is it a case of the top earners,Hogan/Goldberg/Nash/Flair/Hall etc, having different deals with Turner/AOL Time Warner and not directly with WCW?

But why didn't Vince pay stupid money to Goldberg etc straight away and make billions then?

Also, did Turner/Time Warner really keep paying up the top stars' deals all the way to them expiring? Goldberg was therefore taking home big bucks from them for two years after WCW folded?

You are correct on all counts. The big guns all were paid by Turner for a long time after WCW folded, because they essentially just wanted to unload the company on Vince and were willing to take that hit to get it off the books. The WWF bought the contracts of everyone involved in the Invasion and then typically gave them a much lower deal in exchange for the opportunity to make more money as a WWF Superstar(tm). In reality, they should have just done as you noted, and spent all the money to get Goldberg to come in with Flair as his manager.
