Championships not going around waists

On Smackdown, I noticed that pretty much no champion actually ever had the title around their waist during their entrances. Is this a new thing?
Nope, in fact it's part of Vince's whole deal with "It's a championship, not a belt". For a long time, guys were pretty much encouraged to not wear them around their waist, although some thankfully still do. But typically the "over the shoulder" look is preferred.
