The SmarK Rant for WCW Monday Nitro – 09.02.96
(Hey, blog otters. I actually got surprise last-minute tickets to see the Lumineers here in Saskatoon last night, so I was unable to review NXT or really anything else because I’m old and enjoy going to bed at a reasonable hour. It was a GREAT show, by the way, which is weird because you wouldn’t think the “two guys and a piano” aesthetic of their music would translate to a rock show, but it sure did. Anyway, Nitro was once again unopposed on this date, so it’s just the one repost this time.)
Live from somewhere! Turns out to be Chattanooga, TN

Live from somewhere other than Orlando, thank god. In this case, Casper, WY, which Larry immediately buries as “the middle of nowhere”. What a pleasant fellow.
Your hosts are Tony & Larry, and Hulk Hogan is once again the champion after Hog Wild, so they’re pretty bummed.

(Hey all, Scott here. Rampage is gonna have to be Saturday night’s problem after Spider-Man, because I was at work way late and don’t have a review in me tonight. Luckily I always have the RAW & Nitro reposts to fall back on…)
Live from Orlando, FL, at the Disney Studios outdoors. Now THIS is exactly what RAW is lacking. The arena looks and feels like nothing else they had done to that point, like something FRESH.

Uh oh, content warning. Must be a Benoit episode.
Live from somewhere. But our main event tonight is the Horsemen v. Joe Gomez & Renegade, so that’s pretty exciting. Apparently it’s Wheeling, WV.
Your hosts are Tony Schiavone & Larry Zbyszko
Another Nitro review today, as we cover one of Lex Luger’s greatest moments.
WCW was riding high during the summer of 1997, with the New World Order storyline continuing to be a hot hand for them, with a big Hollywood Hogan Vs Sting match still on the horizon for when they decided to pull the trigger on it.
It wasn’t just Sting gunning for Hogan though, as Lex Luger had been looking for a Title shot with The Woodster for most of the summer and he was due to finally get it on a 3 hour special of Nitro (Nitro hadn’t made the permanent move to 3 hours yet).
Interestingly this show was due to take place at The Palace of Auburn Hills, which was the site of one of Luger’s most infamous “chokes”, where he had failed to win the WWF Title from Yokozuna but still celebrated like he had, thus looking like a chump in the process.
Would he be able to shed the “choker” label for one night? Let’s watch on and find out!

LIVE from somewhere. Kind of funny that the show which changed wrestling forever wasn’t important enough to warrant a mention of the city.
Hour #1! Hosted by Tony Schiavone and Larry Z. They’re at ringside, which immediately gives the show a different look and feel. Tony is LEAGUES above Bischoff as an announcer at this point, and immediately the show feels more important and sportlike.
