The main event is Jeff Jarrett vs. Sid for the World Title, but the real big match is Hogan vs. Flair, because we only did that last year at this same show so it’s high time to do it again. Undertaker-Sting at SummerSlam

What do you think is the most likely scenario for the Undertaker and Sting at SummerSlam? Both are apparently going to be wrestling at the show. I’m thinking Undertaker and Sting will be in a tag match, say, against Rollins and Triple H. That’s probably the smartest thing to do if both are actually working the show. Of course, I can be way off base and, as you said in an earlier post, Undertaker will suddenly want revenge on Brock and Sting will go after…Bo Dallas? Anyway, would like your thoughts on how you think both men will be used. Thanks!

​Given the ratings disaster and desperation involved, I think Vince is just gonna swing for the fences and go with Undertaker v. Brock and Sting v. Rollins. Or maybe Undertaker & Kane v. Brock & Cena, I dunno. I just don’t see them building to Undertaker v. Sting, though.

Sting and Undertaker at Summerslam

Surprised that there hasn’t been more of the newsbite dropped on the Observer radio this morning that Undertaker and Sting will be working Summerslam. Low ratings mean that Vince does desperate things, and this isn’t exactly the direction I’d go. Like what, suddenly Undertaker is going to be 30 again and working every week on RAW to fix the problems? A year and a half later and suddenly NOW he decides that he wants revenge on Brock?

However, the NXT show in Brooklyn is apparently close to selling out, so good on them.

Sting in 1988 and isn’t it all the same match

Is Sting's gimmick that year basically the guy who can't win gold? EVERY match of his on a clash or PPV was a title match, either singles or tag, and each time he comes up empty.

And what's up with a show having a hardcore match, street fight, and no holds barred match all on the same card when it's all the same thing?

​And what about airline food?  What's up with that?  Who are the ad wizards who came up with that one?  ​

How Strange With Sting

Scott,
When you now step back and look at the whole  deal with Sting over the last few months,doesn't it strike everyone as extremely odd and weird? He came in to help vanquish The Authority,which he did,but then they managed to return within weeks. He then made limited appearances,barely spoke,then when he did it had all become about WCW and the Monday Night Wars. When he and HHH finally fight,he not only loses in the midcard but is totally buried on commentary,overshadowed storywise by Hogan/Shawn etc,then is now seemingly done with wrestling while HHH moves onto the next big angle within a hour or so. Vince then says what he said at the conference call. Did Steve Borden really look at all this BS and think "Yeah,cool,sign me up….looks great"? Why did it HAVE to be HHH with him anyway? Why not hotshot a better,bigger match with Cena or Taker that would make more actual money? I can say they basically didn't trust Sting to have a good match with anyone but HHH, but yeah, as storylines go it wasn't exactly a masterpiece.  Not to mention that the blowoff was HHH cheating outrageously and using 4 guys to beat Sting, finishing him off with a sledgehammer to the face, to which Sting grudgingly admits HHH is the better guy.  And Sting's whole deal was built up as taking down the Authority and making sure there was no corrupt power like Bischoff, and he LOST.  And then HHH came out later in the SAME SHOW and basically said "Holy shit, it's great to be a corrupt power figure!  In fact, I'm more corrupt than ever!"  

Still, at least Ric Flair didn't turn on him this time, so I count it as a win for him.

Blog question about Sting in ’96

OK, this might be a weird one, but here goes…when Sting stopped bleaching his hair & letting it grow out in late '95/early '96, was it for any reason? The Crow Sting idea wasn't until well after the nWo was formed in the summer of '96, so did he just want a different 'do, or was there some sort of reinvention planned for him in general around that time?

Yes, I actually sit around wondering about shit like this. 

​I think general rumor is that he basically stopped giving a shit due to Hogan related stuff, and a possible drug problem.  I never heard of it being part of a bigger plan or anything.

Sting out of shape at Starrcade 1997

Was reading this bit about Eric Bischoff talking Starrcade 1997 mentioning how Sting came in out of shape and unprepared.

While obviously taking him with a grain of salt, it does make more sense in my mind as to how that match played out. Doesn't make it right, obviously. But if I were Hogan I would have taken it as a big "F you" from Sting. No wonder he started the match beating him up for like 15 minutes. Guy maybe didn't lift one dumbbell in his time off. 

Eric talked about how he had a hard time booking the finish because Hogan was Hogan:

I didn’t really see his point of view. I had a hard time reading between the lines with Hogan because he didn’t come flat out and tell me what his issues were. But I think Hogan was disappointed with Sting’s preparation. Sting was clearly out of shape. He looked like he hadn’t seen a gym or a tanning bed in six months. Up until that time, Sting could get away with that. He’d show up at the arena and do his act wearing his black trench coat and his face paint; he didn’t actually wrestle.

For whatever reason I hadn't heard this explanation. I always took it as the usual "WCW lol WCW."
Typical wrestling bullshit reasoning if true, along with sacred ice-packs and guys getting pushed because they stand out at the airport.  Was Sting the character supposed to be rappelling down into Gold's Gym in the dark of night, doing some reps, and then retreating to the rafters again?  They had EIGHTEEN MONTHS to come up with a finish and in DECEMBER Hogan is suddenly objecting because the mysterious dark-powered babyface isn't tan enough?

Lex & Sting 1995 BFFs

I'm powering through Nitros in 1995 and am still amazed by the oddball Lex and Sting angle. They are best friends but Lex goes with the Dungeon of Doom and is kind of a pseudo face/heel still? It's so bizarre. Has there ever been an angle like that where someone is a heel but has a best friend face and they kinda walk that line for months and months?

Also, the main event of Nitro before Starrade 1995 was a Ric Flair vs Macho Man match for the belt! What a throw-away. Was the NJPW Starrcade a success or a dud? Guessing a dud since it hasn't really happened since.

Also Hulk is unbearable as the loose cannon with a chair while Macho Man is champ, always needing the last word or anything on every show. Awful.

​The Luger-Sting dynamic was totally unique and I still don't know why someone hasn't tried to steal it since.  And you knew they were best friends in real life, so it made the angle all the cooler to see it playing out on TV.  Unfortunately they had negative chemistry together in the the ring, so the blowoff would have sucked.  

​Speaking of sucking, Starrcade was a sellout in the building, but a massive, MASSIVE flop on PPV, only eclipsed in shittiness by the WWF's putrid IYH5 show.  It did 75K buys when they were running about 200K per show typically. 

And don't even get me started on Hogan.  ​

Sting vs. Bret Hart and Edge HOF

Hey Scott,

Read your review of Sting as WON HOF Contender and the unspoken name that kept coming up for me was Bret Hart. Basically, everything you could say for drawing Sting's power, it seems, would apply for Bret, plus, he only had, what, 8 years, tops, as a main event wrestler, versus Sting's bazillion years (Even if they were low-drawing). Yet Bret was in the HOF by '96, after just 4 sub-par (from a drawing standard) years as a main eventer, IMO.

Sure, Bret was probably a much better worker. But does that really justify him being (I assume) a first-ballot WON HOF'er while Sting can't even get past CM Punk or Lesnar.

And Edge? No offense, but WTF? How could Edge beat Sting?
​Edge isn't in either, but he's arguably a better worker and certainly drew better as champion than Sting did.  Edge is basically handicapped by being in the "WWE brand first, superstars second" era of the business, though, where the only one to escape the pack of 50/50 midcarders was John Cena.  
And yes, Bret being not just a better worker, but an elite-level worker more than justifies his inclusion on its own.  Even if he hadn't been in, Montreal alone would have made him a slam dunk inclusion for historical reasons alone.  ​

Sting and Luger – Because WCW?

Extant1979 here. So, if you end up reviewing Nitro, maybe this question gets answered, but I'm into January 1996 now and I thought maybe this could spur some discussion on the BoD. 


Was there an endgame planned for Sting and Lex Luger that just never came to fruition when the nWo came along? Or was it just a week-to-week thing that was allowed to continue to evolve into Sting becoming Crow Sting when the nWo debuted? Was there anything discussed in the the WON archives? 
Pretty much everything from the Nitro era onwards was pretty week-to-week, with Luger seemingly jumping back and forth between heel and face depending on the week and the situation.  There was no endgame I can remember.

Regarding Sting

If they do bring Sting into the WWE, even if it's for a single one time match, how do they do it? 

The simplest way would be to just do a tag team match with Sting/Bryan Danials vs Flair/HHH as they can play on the history between Flair and Sting, hide Sting's ring rust via a tag match scenario, and moreso, have his arrival mean something big as far as Bryan thinking outside the box and purposely recruiting Sting as a partner to go against Flair and HHH as far as far as hitting them with a mystery partner who HHH can not bully or threaten or extort (and who would know Flair like an open book to counter).

I was thinking more that they announce him for the Hall of Fame and someone (let's just say…Moe?) gets all upset that he's never even had a WWE match before, and ​challenges him to said match at the Wrestlemania.

Now THIS is what I'm looking for in a DVD set these days.  A whole bunch of rare TV matches and dream matches like Luger & Sting v. Hogan & Savage and Sting & Warrior v. Bret & Hogan that may not be any good but have the "Wow, when did THAT happen?" factor.  Not to mention Sting/Muta matches I haven't seen and even a Sting/Vader I haven't seen!
