| Hey Scott, I recently watched one of the Legends Roundtables (on the network!) and they mention that after Michaels and Bret Hart's backstage fight in 1997, there were rumors that after Michaels left the locker room he was going to Boston where WCW was taping 1997 in order to jump ship to them. My question is, why did Bischoff never really go after Shawn as heavily as he did Bret to get him into WCW? At that point Michaels was easily as over as Bret, maybe even more so, plus his buddies were basically running the show there. I've heard some people say that WCW wouldn't have known what to do with him just like they didn't know what to do with Bret, but I find it hard to believe that with as much stroke as Nash had that he would have been buried. Was it a case of Michaels being worried that Hogan would halt any advancement for him there or what?Bischoff couldn't ever officially go after Shawn because he was locked up airtight with the WWF, although apparently at various points in the Bret feud Shawn threw tantrums to Vince trying to get fired and/or released so he could go to WCW with Hall & Nash. That would have of course been suicide, but Shawn was on a lot of drugs at that point anyway. Bischoff was smart enough not to tamper with contracts by that point and there was no actual threat of Shawn leaving, as much as he wanted to by 1997. |

I found it very difficult to find One Night Only videos that were intact. This was a very good UK PPV, and I remember watching it live back in Canada, the homeland. Plenty of this thing called “wrestling” on this show. There was a Dude Love vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley match, Vader vs. Owen Hart, and The Undertaker vs. Bret Hart. But do you think I could find a complete version of any of those? So I settled for this two-part clip of HBK and the Bulldog. The heat for this match was off the friggin’ charts. So I said the other day that this match has been shown many times. However, it’s hard to deny that it’s a memorable match. Foley was able to keep up with Michaels for thirty minutes. We all know the story of Vince McMahon changing the match on the fly, but it doesn’t really take away form the fact that this match saved what was otherwise a forgettable show.

Hey Scott,
Every time Shawn's back injury is covered on documentaries, video packages, etc., they always skim over the details of that four years. How could he comeback from a career ending back injury, perform at a high level, and perform some of the craziest bumps at his age?
Because Jesus, I guess? Seriously, dude, he had SPINAL FUSION surgery, that wasn't something you can fake for time off, it was legitimate career-ending shit and to this day there's no rational explanation for why he was able to come back and still be able to wrestle at that level. That's why it's all the more awe-inspiring that he was able to make an entire second career for himself and hold out as long as he did.

Taped 3/11/91, aired on the Prime Time Wrestling “Road to WrestleMania VII: Stars And Stripes Forever” special on 3/17/91.
Hennig was on a major roll at this point, no doubt. Shawn was no slouch himself. Had the Summerslam 93 match even been this good, people wouldn’t have been so pissed about it, I think.

Why the fuck should we give a fuck about Shawn Michaels vs Danial Bryan?
Let's face it. Shawn has become a pathetic joke. He exist SOLELY so Undertaker or anyone who HHH's feuding with, to beat the shit out and in the case of HHH, he's basically a human shield that exists solely so SOMEONE has to get the shit kicked of of them by his opponent, since HHH won't let himself look weak.
He's weak on the mic, has zero character (and hasn't had one in AGES worth a shit) and quite frankly, the idea of him being offered to Danial Bryan as a consolation gift opponent after three months of consistent burial, is a joke.
I'd rather see Bryan get the honor of beating Undertaker (with the added bonus of Undertaker reminding HHH that Undertake has made him his bitch countless years in a row when he publicly tells HHH he won't wrestle HHH again at WM and for him to force HHH to eat shit and let him fight Bryan, who is Undertaker's preferred opponent, with the Undertaker basically BURYING HHH by telling him that HHH is jealous of Bryan because Bryan worked hard to get to the top, whereas HHH had to fuck his way to the top and still the fans fucking hate him and cheered Brock Lenser beating the shit out of him and ruining his big "retirement" moment awhile back).
Bonus points if they stick HHH in the humiliating role of being chained to Kane during the match Jim Cornette style and a situation where HHH his life savings (and Steph's) that Undertaker will beat Bryan and have HHH cry like a bitch over the fact that Bryan did what HHH couldn't do: end the streak. HHH goes away (and we get a couple of filmed vignettes of HHH and Steph living on the streets as homeless scum, with Vince having successfully revoked their parental rights to their kids for extra shits and giggles as far as taking their kids away from them and HHH finding out that everyone remembers him as Rock's bitch boy).
You know what's still awesome? Superior Spider-Man. Love me some Dan Slott.

So, I know everybody shits on their Summerslam match, but this is a great little TV match as Shawn and Curt try to out-sell each other. It drags a little in the middle, but two ridiculous Shawn bumps and a pretty great ending sequence (if not a great ending) make it well worth watching… and it makes it all the weirder that their Summerslam match wasn’t better.
Well, to be fair, everyone shits on their Summerslam match because the WWF themselves basically did everything short of literally going on TV and promising a ***** match and it was only **1/2 or so. But yeah, I’ve seen this match and it was damn good, and they had one on Coliseum Video somewhere that was damn good as well, and to this day I can’t understand why they didn’t click.

Cena vs Michaels

I know WM23 was supposed to be Cena v HHH 2 and fell through. What I don't get is why they went face v face in that instace. I know its been done, but this seems different, without the torch passing of 6 or the inevitability of 17.
I think it was because
a) The direction was roughly moving towards a Cena v. DX storyline.
2) They needed someone who people who would buy in the main event of a Wrestlemania.
c) They wanted a great match.
Shawn meets all of those criteria. It remains the highest WM buyrate in history so obviously it worked fine.
