What the World Was Watching: USWA Championship Wrestling – October 21, 1995

4th December 2020 by LScisco

The announce crew shakeups continue as today’s broadcasting team features Lance Russell, back from his Hawaii vacation, and Corey Maclin.  They are doing today’s show from the WMC-TV5 studio in Memphis, Tennessee.

Russell interviews Bob Armstrong, who lists four conditions to end the USWA-SMW feud.  These are that the fine on his son Jesse James Armstrong should be lifted, Brian Christopher should be suspended for attacking him on last week’s show, Maclin should apologize for anti-Armstrong comments he has made in the past (and Maclin’s facial expression when this condition is read is great), and promoter Randy Hales should announce that he is a coward and leave the USWA forever.  Armstrong’s deadpan delivery during this segment made this an excellent segment.

What the World Was Watching: USWA Championship Wrestling – January 7, 1995

21st February 2020 by LScisco

While Smoky Mountain Wrestling (SMW) was a nostalgic look at wrestling’s past, the United States Wrestling Association (USWA) stubbornly fought for its existence, casting itself as a major promotion that was on the same level as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) or World Championship Wrestling (WCW).  Based in Memphis, Tennessee, a classic wrestling hotbed and arguably the only place to successfully fend off Vince McMahon’s territorial expansion in the 1980s, the USWA was created from a merger of the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA) and World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) in 1989.  The promotion tried to run shows along the East Mississippi and Texas in the early 1990s, but the venture proved unsuccessful.  By the middle of the decade the USWA was back to running its weekly shows in towns such as Louisville, Kentucky and Evansville, Indiana, as well as holding weekly supercards on Monday nights at the Memphis Coliseum.  These events were heavily promoted on USWA TV, filmed at the WMC-TV 5 studio in Memphis.  While that may have made USWA TV seem second rate, the company had a talented core with owners and bookers Jerry Jarrett and Jerry Lawler, as well as announcers Lance Russell and Dave Brown (who had a full-time gig as WMC-TV 5’s meteorologist).  They were supplemented by older territory stars such as Tommy Rich, Doug Gilbert, and Bill Dundee and a crop of new talent that included Lawler’s son Brian Christopher, PG-13, and wrestlers that the WWF and WCW sent for seasoning as the USWA had a working agreement with both.

What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – March 11, 1995

2nd June 2017 by LScisco

–Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler are calling the action and they are now doing tapings in Augusta, Georgia.  These tapings were held on February 21.

–Before the next bout, Jim Cornette tells the crowd that Intercontinental Champion Jeff Jarrett has informed him that he has signed a contract to defend his title against Razor Ramon at WrestleMania.  However, Cornette says that Ramon will not make it there because he is facing Mantaur in the next bout.  Although many did not know it at the time (and as revealed in James Dixon’s book Titan Sinking:  The Decline of the WWF in 1995), the booking of Jarrett and Ramon was a big blow for Ramon, who had filmed some vignettes to turn heel and face the Undertaker.  Turning Ramon heel would have done wonders for his character and strengthened the heel side of the roster.
