A report from Dave Meltzer states that WWE has internally selected Gunther to be John Cena’s last opponent in his wrestling career, as Cena’s retirement tour is close to ending, with his last match set to take place at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13 in Washington, D.C. The report by Meltzer outlined WWE’s plans for Cena’s final match and wrote that a tournament could be held to create the storyline for Gunther to become Cena’s final opponent.

Gunther has not competed in WWE in over a month, since he last had a match at SummerSlam, where he was defeated by CM Punk in the main event of the show to drop the World Heavyweight Title. Seth Rollins then cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and immediately won the title from Punk.

How Many Matches Does John Cena Have Left On His Retirement Tour?

John Cena currently only has four matches left on his retirement tour, with one of those bouts being his clash with AJ Styles at the upcoming Crown Jewel pay-per-view in Perth, Australia. If the report about Gunther being his final opponent is correct, this means there are only two opponents left undecided, and there are only three PPV events left: Saturday Night’s Main Event on November 1, Survivor Series on November 29, and SNME on December 13.
