Tony Khan Comments On Chris Jericho’s AEW Future

Tony Khan has addressed Chris Jericho’s future in AEW amid rumours he is leaving for WWE.

When AEW was first announced in 2019, Chris Jericho was the first big signing for the promotion. Once believed to be a WWE lifer, Y2J’s departure in 2018 was a shock to many. The star made appearances in NJPW, capturing the IWGP Intercontinental Championship from Tetsuya Naito at that year’s Dominion. He went on to hold the title until Wrestle Kingdom 13 the following January, when he lost it back to Naito.

Days after his Wrestle Kingdom loss, Jericho appeared at AEW’s first press conference and signed an initial three-year contract with the company. He went on to be the first AEW World Champion and continued to have prominent roles in the company until April 2025, when he lost the ROH World Title to Bandido at Dynasty.

Following that loss, Jericho disappeared from AEW TV and has since been linked to a WWE return, with fans most recently noting the lack of AEW stars on his annual Jericho Cruise.

‘Chris Jericho Is Always A Welcome Big Part Of AEW’ – Tony Khan

During an appearance on Busted Open Radio, AEW President Tony Khan was asked about Jericho’s future in the promotion. Khan explained that Jericho is always welcome in the company, but admitted we would have to “see what happens” over the coming months.

“I love Chris Jericho. He’s a huge part of AEW, he’s been here since the beginning, and I think we’ll see what happens here in the coming months, but Chris is always a welcome big part of AEW we’d always want to have here. I absolutely am so grateful to Chris Jericho for everything he’s done.”

Khan continued to praise Jericho, and expressed more gratitude for everything he has done for the company.

“You mentioned that AEW book, looking at the history. Well, Chris Jericho is a huge part of that history. The very first AEW World Champion and somebody who’s now a nine-time World Champion and has won several of those championships here with us. So I am very, very grateful to Chris, and Chris is always a very welcome, huge part of AEW.”
