Mick Foley Admits Being Terrified Of Hell In A Cell

By Craig Ballantyne on 11 November 2025

Mick Foley is fearful of more things than people would believe.

Over the course of his career, Mick Foley arguably went through more punishment than any other star in WWE history. The Hall of Famer has been set on fire, buried alive, taken more chairshots than you can count, and been wrapped in barbed wire. Even through all of that, he kept coming back for more.

The most infamous moment in Foley’s career came at King of the Ring 1998. It was there that the star took on The Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell. To the disbelief of everyone, the match started out on top of the cell after Foley climbed up, and Undertaker followed. Things only escalated from there, with Foley being sent flying off the edge of the structure and through an announce table. However, he got back up and climbed up the cell again, only to be Chokeslammed through it. The match finally came to an end when The Deadman Tombstoned Foley on thumbtacks for the pinfall win.

“I’m More Fearful Of Many Things Than People Would Believe” – Mick Foley

The bout solidified Foley as The Hardcore Legend, but now he has admitted that he was terrified as he watched The Undertaker walk down the ramp while he was on the roof of the cage.

Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, he explained that he doesn’t see himself as fearless, but he is courageous enough to face his fears.

“I’m afraid of a lot of things. I maintain Shane McMahon was fearless. You could say I was courageous. Courage is action in the face of fear. I was terrified of the cell. When I looked down the entirety of Undertaker’s entrance was spent with me thinking, How do I climb down this thing without ruining my career? I couldn’t think of it, and that’s why the match unfolded the way it did.

“But yeah, when I drive through the Sierra Nevadas, I get really dizzy. Anything with heights, I can’t look over, even if I’m going up to Lake Arrowhead in the mountains, I can’t look over. I’m really scared. I’m more fearful of many things than people would believe.”
