What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – 08.06.94

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler are commentating, concluding the taping in Ocean City, Maryland. On the WWE Network version of this show Stan Lane and Lord Alfred Hayes commentate due to “technical difficulties.”

Opening Contest: Owen Hart (w/Jim Neidhart) (31-0) defeats Mike Khoury via submission to the Sharpshooter at 2:36:

Owen continues to run up his long unbeaten streak since turning heel, meeting a Khoury blind charge with a boot and finishing with a missile dropkick and Sharpshooter. After the match, Owen does the Hitman shades trick to Khoury.

Lex Luger is a guest on the Heartbreak Hotel. Luger must be a forgiving man since he clashed with Diesel a few weeks ago on Monday Night RAW. He denies that Ted DiBiase owns him despite Shawn Michaels getting him to admit that DiBiase made him a lucrative offer and he likes nice things. Luger closes by saying he will beat Tatanka at SummerSlam. This interview was bad as Luger reverted to a boring, wooden delivery and seemed like he would rather be doing something else.

Kwang (w/Harvey Wippleman) (16-4-1) pins Jim Powers after a spinning heel kick at 1:14:

These two had a decent match on All American Wrestling in late June but Kwang learned a lot from that contest as he finishes Powers in short order with a few spinning heel kicks.

Jeff Jarrett (22-5-1) pins the 1-2-3 Kid (14-3-1) with a Flair pin at 4:50:

Angry about Jarrett’s past beatdowns, the Kid attacks him after coming through the crowd. He tries to piledrive Jarrett but gets backdropped. Despite that, Jarrett struggles to sustain an offense as the Kid keeps trapping him in pinning combinations. After fighting out of a sleeper hold the Kid does some second rope punches until Jarrett knocks him off and plants his feet on the ropes for a win. Referee Joey Marella, who makes his last televised appearance, comes in and tries to convince referee Tim White of what happened but White refuses to overturn the decision, so Jarrett’s cheap win stands. To add insult to injury, the video board shows how Jarrett pinned the Kid but White went gone backstage already. Rating: **¼

Duke Droese (10-0) pins Ray Hudson after the Trash Compactor at 1:29:

Lauren Jones is the guest fan ring announcer and despite being a small child she does better than the last three people who have gotten to do it. Hudson does not do a good job selling Droese’s offense, making it seem like the moves are a minor inconvenience to him. A clothesline against the buckles and the Trash Compactor gives the trash man to another win. After the match, Lawler uses the Royal Magistrator to draw a gas mask on himself to offset Droese’s odor.

Todd Pettengill does the SummerSlam Report. The big announcement is that former Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton will be in Razor Ramon’s corner for his Intercontinental title match against Diesel. Two new title matches are added to the card as WWF Women’s Champion Alundra Blayze will defend against Bull Nakano and WWF Tag Team Champions the Headshrinkers will face Bam Bam Bigelow & Irwin R. Schyster. Also, it is revealed that Mabel will face Jeff Jarrett. Tatanka still accuses Lex Luger of selling out because of all the rumors he has heard. WWF Champion Bret Hart tells Owen Hart that his joyride of success is over. Paul Bearer says Ted DiBiase will need more money when he is in the presence of his Undertaker.

A new Leslie Nielsen video sees him superimposed on scenes of different parts of the world as he looks for the Undertaker. He walks past a “dead end” sign near a cemetery and says he is on to something.

Razor Ramon (24-3) pins Mike Haywood after the Razor’s Edge at 2:12:

Haywood was an Ivan Koloff trainee who had just started his career, opting to become a professional wrestler rather than join the Marines. His dad worked odd jobs for Jim Crockett Promotions. He later worked as Michael Youngblood on the independent circuit and his wrestling attire was a mix of Tatanka and the Road Warriors.

Ramon uses his size advantage to bully Haywood, who later tries to body press Ramon off the ropes and fails like everyone before him.

Tune in next week to see Adam Bomb face Timothy Well! Also, the Fake Undertaker, WWF Tag Team Champions the Headshrinkers, and Bob Backlund will be in action! And Jim Cornette will be a guest on the Heartbreak Hotel!

The Last Word: The 1-2-3 Kid and Jeff Jarrett put on a decent match with the time that they were given. It seems odd that Jarrett faces Mabel at SummerSlam instead of the Kid because of their feud. The Lex Luger-Tatanka storyline is not clicking as there has never been anything to lead fans to believe that Luger has sold out. It is the opposite of the intrigue of the Randy Savage-Ultimate Warrior build two years before. Overall, this was just another pedestrian show on the way to SummerSlam.
