What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – 07.02.94

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler are calling today’s action, starting a new taping cycle in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. According to thehistoryofwwe.com, the taping took place on June 21. This is Ross’ return after he disappeared during Wrestling Challenge on February 13.

Opening Contest: Irwin R. Schyster (19-3) beats Doink the Clown (w/Dink) (20-1) with a small package at 4:47:

Lawler, who has been the only constant in the Superstars announce booth in recent weeks, jokes that Ross should not get too comfortable in his chair as no one knows who might be calling matches next week. IRS just goes with a generic rant against people not paying taxes, avoiding any circus lingo. Lawler makes another good point about how Doink needs to pay a gift tax on Dink since he was a gift from Santa last year. IRS chooses to use a lot of rest holds so Doink carries the offensive load. When IRS tries to use the briefcase as a weapon late in the contest, Dink grabs it. IRS catches up to him but Doink prevents any punishment from affecting his friend. As Dink fiddles with the briefcase underneath the ring, IRS kicks out of a belly-to-belly suplex and then surprises Doink with a small package for the win. Rating: *½

IRS thinks something is amiss with his briefcase after Dink slides it back in the ring after the match is over. When IRS opens it, a fireball shoots out of it and the clowns dance in the aisle.

Live Event News shows WWF Women’s Champion Alundra Blayze skydiving. The 1-2-3 Kid goes later. This had to be terrible for the Kid since he is afraid of heights.

The 1-2-3 Kid (12-2) pins Reno Riggins after a superduperplex at 3:41:

This is a fun squash match that is fast paced. After an opening wrestling sequence, Riggins tries to pin the Kid with a hiptoss. He gets another near-fall later with a Northern Lights suplex. The Kid fires back with a spinning heel kick and suplex for two and then crotches Riggins when he goes to the top rope with a dropkick, winning with a superduperplex.

The Heavenly Bodies (w/Jim Cornette) (9-0) defeat Rich Myers & Derek Domino when Tom Prichard pins Myers after a flying elbow drop at 2:16:

Jimmy Del Ray wrestled this match with a cracked pelvis. He is noticeably ailing on the way to the ring and Prichard wrestles most of the match. As noted before, that injury came at a terrible time as the Bodies were in line for a shot at the Tag Team titles. Del Ray plants Myers with a side suplex and Prichard caps things off with a flying elbow drop.

Bam Bam Bigelow (w/Ted DiBiase) (20-4) pins Mike Moraldo after a Million Dollar bulldog at 1:10:

Bigelow tries to show his worth to DiBiase so he makes quick work of Moraldo. After avalanching the perennial jobber in the corner, Bigelow applies the Million Dollar Dream and bulldogs Moraldo from that position for the victory. If Bigelow did not have some other cool moves that would have been a great finisher for him.

Paul Bearer is a guest on the Heartbreak Hotel, providing a humorous contrast between Bearer’s look and the interview set. After Michaels accuses Bearer of leading the Undertaker to his demise at The Royal Rumble, Bearer says he has regained contact with the Dead Man. That does not mean he has spoken to him, though. He says that he will be on Monday Night RAW to get a better view of the Undertaker because he does not think Ted DiBiase understands what he has. When Michaels tells Bearer that his talk of the Undertaker refusing to rest in peace is cheap, the electricity of the set malfunctions and the Undertaker’s theme plays as Bearer screams about feeling the Undertaker’s presence.

The Smoking Gunns (12-2) defeat the Executioners when Billy pins Agony after the Sidewinder at 2:15:

Holly Kromas is the guest fan ring announcer, receiving one of the Gunns oversized red cowboys hats. She likes it, though, so that is what matters. The Gunns were last seen in a loss to Crush and Yokozuna last month but they are no worse for wear, getting back to their winning ways with their usual offense. Ross mentions during the squash that fans will learn about the SummerSlam main event on next week’s show.

Jim Neidhart (w/Owen Hart) beats Todd Mata via submission to a Camel Clutch at 2:17:

Owen, still floating on airs from his King of the Ring Tournament victory, wears his royal garb to ringside. Neidhart comes out to the Hart Foundation’s theme music. He does not offer much in the ring, doing some basic pounding before hitting a powerslam and winning with a Camel Clutch.

Ted DiBiase promises that Tatanka will feel the Fake Undertaker’s wrath next week.

Tune in next week to see Tatanka face the Fake Undertaker! Also, Women’s Champion Alundra Blayze will defend against Luna Vachon! And Intercontinental Champion Diesel, Owen Hart, and Duke Droese will be in action! The SummerSlam main event will be announced too!

The Last Word: This was a better show than last week because the in-ring action was better. Next week starts the SummerSlam build so that should enhance the weekly television product.
