What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – 06.04.94

Opening Contest: Mabel (w/Oscar) (4-0) pins Mike Sharpe after the sidewalk slam at 1:57:

For some reason the WWE Network version of this episode does not include this match. Sharpe has been one of the favorite targets of Men on a Mission since they arrived last year and his streak of futility extends to singles competition, failing a test of strength, getting avalanched, and wiped out with a sidewalk slam. This was one of Mabel’s best singles matches so far.

Stan Lane narrates footage of this year’s class of Hall of Fame inductees.

Nikolai Volkoff (w/Ted DiBiase) (3-0) beats Derek Domino via submission to the Boston Crab at 2:32:

The crowd is bored throughout the match, watching as Volkoff spams suplexes and slams. DiBiase is still not happy with Volkoff, storming off after Volkoff wins. As a result, Volkoff hurries after him when the match is over.

Paul Bearer says that DiBiase is a liar when he claims to have made contact with the Undertaker.

Adam Bomb (4-5) defeats Kwang (11-3-1) via count out at 3:05:

Harvey Wippleman does not come out with either man, arriving later and lamenting that his charges are fighting each other. Most of the match is each man slugging the other. The crowd does not care about it at all. When Bomb knocks Kwang out of the ring after one of those exchanges, Wippleman prevents Kwang from re-entering and ushers him back to the locker room. McMahon claims that Wippleman has sided with Kwang, theoretically preventing the match from continuing because his choice was getting beat up. This is a weak beginning to Bomb’s singles push as a babyface. Rating: DUD

Tatanka (15-1-2) pins Reno Riggins after the Papoose to Go at 2:48:

Riggins bumps like a pro throughout, doing the Flair flip in the corner and trying to come off the top rope, only to meet a chop on the way down. McMahon apologizes for his remarks halfway through, though, when Riggins throws Tatanka to the mat and tells the camera that he has no reservations about beating an Indian. Like all of Tatanka’s squashes, this ends after he goes on the warpath after he gets taken to the turnbuckle.

Todd Pettengill does The King of the Ring Report. Yokozuna, Crush, Jim Cornette, and Mr. Fuji talk about how WWF Tag Team Champions the Headshrinkers lack sense for signing a match with them. Roddy Piper provides another promo from home, saying that he did not start the feud with Jerry Lawler but will finish it.

Owen Hart (21-0) beats Phil Apollo via submission to the Sharpshooter at 2:44:

Ken Bevan, who calls himself “The Smooth One” is the guest fan ring announcer.. He wears a tie over a t-shirt and makes a mockery of the whole process, which McMahon does not appreciate. Owen starts the squash by wrestling Apollo fairly but slaps him at the end of a chain wrestling sequence. That cues an increased pace of action but Owen remains in control and polishes off another win with a missile dropkick and Sharpshooter. After the match, Owen works over Apollo’s leg and does the Hitman shades routine.

After a replay of Intercontinental Champion Diesel and Shawn Michaels attacking WWF Champion Bret Hart on RAW is shown, Diesel and Michaels do a pre-recorded bit, saying what took place is a sign for things to come. Bret rebuts that Diesel is weak because he needed two other men to beat him down. He says that he will be bringing a family member to The King of the Ring to neutralize Michaels’ presence.

The Quebecers (w/Johnny Polo) (11-4-1) beat Tony Roy & Tim McNeany when Pierre pins McNeany after the Boston Crab-flying leg drop combination at 1:40:

Roy never tags in, watching as the Quebecers run through their double teams moves on McNeany.

Ted DiBiase promises that he will have the Undertaker with him next week.

The Last Word: This was one of the weaker episodes in some time because of the bad feature match but there was still some storyline development with the announcement that Bret Hart would be bringing someone with him to The King of the Ring and Ted DiBiase announcing that he would bring the Undertaker back next week. Lex Luger was supposed to appear on the Heartbreak Hotel but the WWF scrapped that segment for whatever reason. It seems like no other matches will be added to The King of the Ring card so all that is left is figuring out whether Tatanka or Crush gets the last tournament spot on Monday Night RAW. Since Crush is already wrestling a tag team match on the pay-per-view that spoils the outcome.
