What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – 05.28.94

Jerry Lawler talks backstage with Harvey Wippleman, who declares that victory for Adam Bomb today will be as easy as one-two-three.

Vince McMahon and Lawler are in the booth, taped from Albany, New York.

Opening Non-Title Contest: Diesel (Intercontinental Champion) (12-0) pins P.J. Walker after the Jackknife at 1:54:

The squash puts over Diesel’s size as Walker cannot take him off his feet with a couple of dropkicks and a clothesline. A big boot, side suplex, and Jackknife keep Diesel’s momentum going.

The Smoking Gunns (9-1) beat Mike Sharpe & Tony DeVito when Billy pins DeVito after the Sidewinder at 3:03:

The Gunns have not had a televised match in more than a month. They are in an awkward spot in the Tag Team division because they have no one to feud with and are blocked from getting the titles by the Headshrinkers. Sharpe and DeVito try to work over Billy in their corner but they miscommunicate and Billy gets out. The Gunns spend time working DeVito’s arm before doing the Sidewinder. As a replay shows the finish, McMahon says that Roddy Piper, the Valiant Brothers, the Fabulous Moolah, Johnny Rodz, Jose Estrada, Don Muraco, George Steele, Ivan Putski, Ivan Koloff, Dick Murdoch, Ernie Ladd, Killer Kowalski, Sergeant Slaughter, and Bobby Davis will be guests at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Baltimore, Maryland in a few weeks.

King of the Ring Qualifying Match: The 1-2-3 Kid (6-1) beats Adam Bomb (w/Harvey Wippleman) (4-4) after heel miscommunication at 5:12:

McMahon and Lawler argue that the Kid is a big underdog. That is true in size but the Kid is winning some matches of substance whereas Bomb has not notched a decent win since last year. Bomb controls most of the bout, countering a Kid pescado by catching him and kneeing him when he runs the ropes. The crowd enjoys the Kid’s brief comeback and then Wippleman gets on the apron to keep the referee from counting when the Kid hits a flying Lou Thesz press. After that, the Kid runs into a side suplex. Kwang comes to ringside and the plan is for him to spray mist in the Kid’s eyes but it hits Bomb, allowing the Kid to schoolboy the bigger man and qualify. Rating: **

Fireworks go off after the Kid’s win. Bomb takes a swing at Wippleman afterward. The manager scurries out of the ring and runs to the locker room with Kwang.

Yokozuna (w/Jim Cornette & Mr. Fuji) (8-3) pins Corey Student after a belly-to-belly suplex at 2:09:

Student loses a slugfest with the former WWF champion. McMahon hypes a D-Day Challenge where members of the WWF roster will be in a tug-of-war aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid with the Combined Seagoing Forces of the U.S. Military. The members of the WWF team will be the Headshrinkers, Bam Bigelow, and Men on a Mission. Yokozuna slowly pounds away, sparing Student the Banzai Drop. He appears completely winded after the match.

Todd Pettengill provides The King of the Ring Report. WWF Champion Bret Hart says that he can get the Sharpshooter on Diesel. Roddy Piper has some taped promos from home, petting his dog on the back of his truck. He says he is not trash talking Jerry Lawler, merely fighting him to help children. Owen Hart argues that everyone in the tournament is afraid of him. He is eager to find out who his opponent will be in the first round.

Irwin R. Schyster (13-2) defeats Mike Moraldo via submission to the Penalty at 1:25:

IRS tells fans before the match that they need to stop burdening the wealthy and pay their fair share. He works a faster pace than RAW, not relying on rest holds. Moraldo floats over a suplex and gets a fluke schoolboy for two, leading to IRS slamming him and locking in the Penalty for a 12th-straight singles win.

A tow truck driver claims to have seen the Undertaker lying in the middle of traffic. According to the account, the Undertaker got up, jumped on a few cars, and jumped over a guardrail.

Ted DiBiase is in a funeral parlor. He claims to have made contact with the Undertaker, who will soon serve his interests.

The Heavenly Bodies (w/Jim Cornette) (6-0) beat Mike Davis & Phil Apollo when Tom Prichard pins Davis after a powerbomb-flying elbow drop combination at 3:05:

The squash plays as a backdrop for McMahon to hype Jimmy Del Ray’s King of the Ring qualifier on Monday night against Tatanka. Lawler announces in the late stages of the match that Adam Bomb is going to face Kwang. McMahon alleges that Kwang and Harvey Wippleman intentionally cost Bomb his qualifying match earlier in the show. Apollo takes a lot of punishment but tags Davis, who takes a new finishing move from the Bodies.

Wippleman is shown trying to hide from Adam Bomb in the parking lot. Bomb finds him and grabs him by the throat, demanding to know where Kwang is.

A disheveled Wippleman cannot be heard saying who he will support in next week’s feature match.

The Last Word: Turning Adam Bomb babyface was predictable since he has been used to put over other babyfaces in the first half of the year. In a crowded babyface scene, though, he may struggle to find a footing. It is interesting how the King of the Ring Tournament bracket is coming together as brawlers like Razor Ramon, Mabel, and Bam Bigelow are in the upper draw while technical workers like Jeff Jarrett, Owen Hart, and the 1-2-3 Kid are in the bottom half.
