Smackdown Review – 08.15.25

Smackdown is ON THE USA NETWORK from the TD Garden Arena in Boston, MA. The announce team for tonight’s show is Joe Tessitore and Wade Barrett on match calls and analysis, Mark Nash on ring introductions, and Byron Saxton on backstage interviews. (No Cathy Kelley, booooooo!)

Here’s WWE Men’s United States Champion Solo Sikoa with the MFT’s making their way to the ring. Highlights are shown of last week‘s match between Sami Zayn and Sikoa, followed by the MFT’s attacking Zayn on Raw. Sikoa opens by reminding the crowd that the MFT’s run Smackdown and it’s too bad for anyone not liking that. Sikoa says that Zayn, Jimmy Uso, and Jacob Fatu have all been “stomped out” by the MFT’s and if there’s anyone in the back….

Here’s Sami Zayn to join the proceedings. Zayn stands on the ring apron and says he’s just here to talk and Sikoa says the floor is his. Sikoa tells his crew to exit the ring and Zayn climbs in. Zayn says he’s been talking about becoming a world champion for months and if he’d beaten Rusev on Monday night he might have had a shot at Clash in Paris, but now that can’t happen and he was furious in the aftermath. Zayn also says he felt liberated because he was essentially spinning his wheels and putting tons of pressure on himself and now he can go back to doing other things he set out to do. Zayn thanks Sikoa, who looks quizzical. Zayn tells Sikoa that besides the world title, there’s only one other one he hasn’t held in WWE and it’s Sikoa’s US title. Sikoa says Sami “doesn’t even go” to Smackdown and he doesn’t ever want to see him in the SDL ring again. Zayn informs Sikoa that as of tonight he’s an official member of Smackdown’s roster and he’s coming for Sikoa and the US title.

Zayn and Sikoa start throwing hands and of course Zayn is immediately swarmed by the MFT’s. Zayn is held up so Sikoa can blast him in the face with a right and here’s Big Jim Uso to start evening the score. It’s still four-on-two however and here’s Jacob Fatu to enter the mix. Fatu slips a Talla Tonga clothesline attempt in the aisle and heads straight for Sikoa. The other MFT’s get dumped and Uso and Zayn end up dumping Tonga out over the top rope with a clothesline after a Fatu superkick stopped his progress. Here’s Smackdown GM Nick Aldis to make a SIX MAN TAG MATCH PLAYA for the main event.

A standard opening segment to set up the main event, but it’s good to see Sami immediately get some shine by moving brands. He felt stale on Raw, and this will give him some new stuff to do assuming he’s not bogged down with the MFT’s for months on end.

Here’s Byron Saxton backstage with Chelsea Green and The Secret Hervice. Piper Niven is giving Saxton a thorough going-over and throws his pocket square to the ground to presumably keep him safe to talk to Green. Saxton asks how they got here and Green says all she did was break up a stupid birthday celebration and she ended up with a FUNFETTI cake all over her face. Niven says that no one messes with OUR CANADIAN HERO and gets away with it. Fyre says Niven is going to take out Bliss and then they’re coming for the women’s tag titles.

Alexa Bliss, seconded by Charlotte Flair, makes her entrance as we go to commercials.

WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Alexa Bliss vs Piper Niven

Tessitore is wildly annoyed by Barrett standing and saluting Niven during her entrance. Bliss gets the crowd to cheer for Lilly but as she places the doll in the corner Niven trucks her. Niven puts the boots to Bliss in the corner, but Bliss manages to fight back with some forearms. Niven puts a stop to that with a throat chop and then orders Fyre and Green to take Lilly. Flair intervenes to prevent that from happening. Bliss again goes to the forearms and then climbs on Niven’s back to slap on a sleeper. Niven breaks free and snap-mares Bliss over her shoulder. Niven bullies Bliss and then puts a knee over Bliss’s back as she’s draped over the second rope. Bliss tries to fire up again but Niven catches her in a Bossman slam and then salutes the crowd as we go to picture-in-picture commercials.

During PIP Flair tries to fire up the crowd as Niven catches Bliss in a nasty looking shoulder-breaker. Niven covers for two. Niven twists a seated Bliss by the neck. Bliss rises and fires off some forearms but Niven shrugs it off and crushes Bliss with a forearm of her own. Niven removes her suit jacket while Flair gripes at the referee, which of course allows Green and Fyre to attack a helpless Bliss. Niven whips her jacket at Flair which sets her off and she jumps on the apron to bark at Niven. Niven runs Bliss into a corner and bullies her some more before hitting a big splash. Niven dances a little for some reason and then just walks up and slaps Bliss dead in the face. (There was a real Mr. Blonde vibe to this.) Niven tries a cannonball but Bliss slips it and Niven crashes hard into the turnbuckles.

Back to full screen with Bliss firing up and hitting a big knee to a prone Niven’s jaw. Bliss hits a shotgun dropkick and three rolling sentons on Niven, and then follows that up with a rolling Blockbuster. Bliss covers for two. Niven headbutts Bliss to slow her down and Bliss ends up seated in a corner. Niven finally hits the cannonball and then ascends. Niven misses a springing splash and Bliss springs up and DDT’s her. Bliss ascends as Green climbs up to the apron. Flair charges over and dumps Green to the floor. Fyre jumps on the apron and Bliss jumps down to blast her in the face. Bliss slips a Niven charge and rolls her up for three.

This was mostly to set up the post-match attack, but it worked okay for a big person-little person match and had the exact finish you’d expect. Niven is funny as hell in this role but I like that they finally showed a vicious side in the post-match. 2*

Winner – Alexa Bliss (roll-up)

Post-match sees Fyre immediately blast Bliss with a superkick. Flair charges in with no shoes on and dumps Fyre with a clothesline before chopping away at Niven. Green tries to break it up and Flair starts chopping her. Niven trucks Flair and then devastates her with a standing senton. Flair sags to the floor where Green immediately grabs her and runs her into the ring-post. Green runs Flair over the barrier to the timekeeper’s area. Niven splashes Bliss in the corner and then Fyre hits the Gory Bomb on Bliss. Niven ascends and hits her second-rope springboard splash on a prone Bliss. Green and the Hervice stand over Bliss and salute before putting the bad-mouth on Bliss.

Here’s Nick Aldis standing between Jade Cargill and WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton who are griping at each other. Aldis says he knows that Cargill wants another shot at Stratton but there’s channels to go through. Here’s Nia Jax to point out that even though Cargill won Queen of the Ring, she didn’t have what it took to become a champion, unlike Jax. Stratton tells Jax that she’s already told Cargill that no matter the challenge the outcome will be the same and if Jax wants to fight, bring it.

The Miz and Carmelo Hayes make their entrance as we go to commercials.

Melo Don’t Miz vs Fraxiom

Axiom and Hayes start but Miz tags in immediately to Hayes’s annoyance. Joe Gacy is in the crowd as Axiom grabs a wristlock. Miz reverses out of it and as it turns out Dexter Lumis is in the crowd as well. Miz temporarily wins a test of strength and a series of monkey flips leave both guys bridging to try to avoid a count. Miz kicks Axiom as the crowd wants Hayes in the match (Hayes is from Boston, obviously.) Axiom pops Miz in the mouth before Frazer, who blind tagged, comes off the top rope and wallops Miz with a double fist. Frazer uses his speed to intimidate Miz who immediately decides that Hayes should deal with this.

Frazer whips Hayes down with armdrags, but Hayes rises and charges Frazer. Frazer slips that and manages to hit an enziguri on Hayes. Axiom tags in and he and Frazer hit double-team offense on Hayes before Miz charges in and gets some of that as well. Axiom hits Miz with a tope suicida before Frazer does the same thing to Hayes. Frazer and Axiom then hit second topes on Miz and Hayes respectively. We go to commercials.

Back live with Hayes getting a two count on Axiom. Tessitore relates that Hayes told him he came to TD Bank when he was eight and got to see Eddie Guerrero face Rey Mysterio Jr.. Hayes superkicks a charging Axiom. Axiom manages to roll through and roll up Hayes for a sneaky two. Hayes ducks an enziguri attempt and snatches Axiom up for a sit-out powerbomb. Hayes covers for two. Hayes takes a swipe at Frazer but when he turns he eats an Axiom dropkick. After a reset both guys tag their partners as Frazer and Miz charge in.

Frazer comes off the top rope with a forearm shot that staggers Miz. Frazer flies past Miz a couple of times before flattening him with a sling-blade. Frazer nails Hayes on the apron before hitting a running shooting star press on Miz. Frazer covers and gets two. Frazer ascends but Miz slips his Phoenix splash attempt. Frazer rolls a charging Miz up for two. Miz fires off a knee lift and tags in Hayes. Hayes and Miz miscommunicate and Frazer takes advantage to drop Miz to the floor with a kick. Hayes charges in and tries for a springboard but Frazer meets him and hits a Spanish Fly for two. (Replay shows how close Hayes came to landing directly on his head. Scary bump, that.)

Axiom tags in and Hayes manages to boot Frazer off and to the floor. Hayes hits a big back elbow on a charging Axiom before ascending. Axiom hits an enziguri and mounts Hayes on the top turnbuckle. Frazer tags in and goes to the opposite corner. Axiom hits his own Spanish Fly before Frazer nails Hayes with the Phoenix splash. Miz charges in to break up Frazer’s cover at two. Frazer gets the advantage on Hayes and once again mounts him on the top turnbuckle. Hayes pushes Frazer off but he lands on his feet and immediately charges over to enziguri Hayes. Axiom jumps up to attempt something so Miz charges over and DDT’s Axiom on the apron.

Hayes pushes Frazer away on his superplex attempt and turns it into a cutter on Frazer. Hayes fires up and ascends in his team corner. Miz tags himself in to Hayes’s utter bafflement and hits the Skull Crushing Finale on Frazer for three.

The crowd was really hyped for Melo so this worked well. The formula of Miz sort of big-brothering Melo might play out in an interesting way mostly because Miz just makes things work like that. Fraxiom are what they are but this loss is interesting because they could have put this loss on a makeshift team instead of one that just fought in the TLC match at Summerslam. 3*

Winner – Melo Don’t Miz (Miz Skull Crushing Finale on Frazer)

Tessitore and Barrett talk up Melo Don’t Miz possibly being in line for a tag title shot before putting on the somber voices and announcing that there is no medical update on Cody Rhodes after the Drew McIntyre attack last week. McIntyre will be out to address everyone after commercials.

After the break, Tiffany Stratton is approached by Kiana James to offer her and Giulia’s services to Stratton as “backup”. James says she can offer brand expansion and a custom pink title belt for Stratton. Stratton says she’s already a champion and doesn’t need backup at this point. James politely reminds Stratton that if she’s not with them, she’s against them (It’s at this point that I notice Nikki Cross swaying aimlessly in the back of a production truck that is in the back of the scene.) Stratton leaves in a huff. Here’s Michin with kendo stick in hand to tell James that despite never picking up her calls, she is the one to face Giulia next. James exits.

Here’s Drew McIntyre slowly marching to the ring and grabbing a mic. McIntyre says people have been asking him all week why he Claymore’d Cody’s head through the announce table. McIntyre wants to see the clip so they play it on the tron. McIntyre says he didn’t attack Cody and everyone’s eyes are deceiving them. McIntyre questions Tessitore about a medical update and then tosses out the idea that someone is hiding something. McIntyre says he doesn’t hate Rhodes, he feels sorry for him because of how much Rhodes cares about the crowds reactions. McIntyre says he was in Rhodes position five years ago but he evolved. McIntyre says when you retire the crowds forget about you and move on so you have to get yours while you can. McIntyre wants Rhodes title, he’s been screwed out of it more times than he can count and he’s earned it at this point. Rhodes is a nobody without his title and he was the one who attacked McIntyre last week. McIntyre reconstructs the ending of last week’s tag match and says he was on the floor when the DQ happened ending the match. Then, Rhodes ran McIntyre’s head into the post and started clearing the announce desk. (All true, this is exactly what happened.) McIntyre says Rhodes is good at pissing people off but he’s good at taking them out. McIntyre says if he’s provoked he’ll be the real nightmare. McIntyre tosses the mic away and tells the camera “Get well soon.”

Excellent promo from Drew here. Much like Kevin Owens promo describing how he felt when Cody teamed with Roman, this promo showed good heel fire mixed with real-life logic.

Here’s Byron Saxton backstage with The Street Profits and B-Fab. Saxton asks the Profits if they feel like they’ll get a tag title shot if they beat DIY tonight, but before they can answer here’s Solo Sikoa and the MFT’s to ask why that would happen. Sikoa says once they win the main event tonight, the Profits will have to go through them to get to the tag titles. Dawkins and Ford object and make sure to tell Sikoa that they’re up and they want the……..smoke. The Profits exit and Sikoa scoffs, but Talla Tonga is distracted by something. The MFT’s leave and it turns out that Tonga was spooked by Erick Rowan.

DIY with Candace LeRae make their entrance as we go to commercials.

Once back live Tessitore lets us know that Naomi will be on Raw this Monday to address…something.

DIY vs The Street Profits

B-Fab seconds the Profits. Ford and Ciampa will start as the bell sounds.

Ciampa hits a back elbow on Ford, but when he charges Ford crushes Ciampa with a dropkick. Ciampa reverses an irish whip attempt and boots Ford in the face. Ciampa drags Ford to the team corner and Gargano tags in. Gargano whips Ciampa who rocks Ford with a forearm, and Gargano follows with a high kneelift. Ciampa runs the length of the ring to knee a sitting Ford in the face before he and Gargano taunt the crowd while celebrating. Gargano puts the boots to a prone Ford as Ciampa tags in. Ford slips a Gargano charge and leaps over a charging Ciampa to tag in Dawkins. Dawkins bullies Ciampa to a neutral corner and starts whaling away with rights.

They run the ropes and Dawkins wallops Ciampa with a flying elbow. Gargano marches in and eats a Dawkins facebuster. Dawkins blasts a prone Ciampa with a flying elbow and barely grazes Ciampa with an enziguri (I think he missed entirely but Ciampa sold it like a pro anyway.) Ciampa bails to the floor and hides behind LeRae as Dawkins wants some more action. Ciampa uses that time to recover and he knees a returning Dawkins to the floor. Gargano tags in and kicks Dawkins in the head. LeRae, Ciampa, and Gargano sit on the apron together to celebrate and pat themselves on the back as we go to picture-in-picture commercials.

During PIP Gargano tosses Dawkins back in and crushes him with a left hook. Gargano kicks Dawkins down in a neutral corner before standing on his face. Dawkins takes another left hook and ends up in DIY’s corner as Ciampa tags in. Ciampa dominates Dawkins in the corner and steals Gargano’s “stand on his face” move. Ciampa mocks Ford but this gives Dawkins enough time to fire off some rights. A Ciampa knee puts a stop to that and Gargano tags in. Ciampa runs Dawkins face-first into Gargano’s outstretched boots. Gargano prevents Dawkins from tagging before mocking Ford who stupidly charges in. The ref deals with an angry Ford as Gargano and Ciampa work Dawkins over in their corner. Gargano bullies Dawkins to a neutral corner and chops away. Dawkins flips a charging Gargano onto the apron but Gargano calmly pops him in the mouth. Gargano runs down the apron and hits Ford with an enziguri sending him to the floor.

Back to full screen with Gargano leaping through the second and third ropes for Dawkins to catch him in a cutter as both are down in the aftermath. Ciampa tags in as Dawkins finally makes it over to tag in Ford. Ford meets a charging Ciampa with a roundhouse kick and ascends. Ford hits a massive cross-body on Ciampa and then punches Gargano square in the face. Ford hits Ciampa with clotheslines and ducks Ciampa’s response attempt at one. Ford nails Ciampa with another clothesline and Gargano marches in. Ford ends up hitting a Fameasser on Gargano before walloping Ciampa with a jumping neckbreaker. Ford hits a standing shooting star press on Ciampa and covers for two.

Ford tags in Dawkins and Ciampa’s short burst of offense is countered by Dawkins tossing Ciampa into a Ford backbreaker. Dawkins covers for two as Gargano breaks it up. Ford dumps Gargano to the floor and then runs the apron to blast him with a kick to the chest. Dawkins hoists Ciampa on his shoulders and tags Ford in. As they set up for the Blockbuster LeRae charges over and dumps B-Fab head first into the ring steps (She seriously went in pretty hard, I hope she’s okay.) This gives Ciampa a chance to slip down and run Dawkins shoulder-first into the ring post as Ford misses his jump. Ford misses an enziguri attempt and Ciampa calmly knees him in the face. Gargano tags in and Ciampa holds Ford upside down so Gargano can kick him in the head. Ciampa dumps Ford to the mat and Gargano covers for two as Dawkins breaks it up.

All four are down but Dawkins and Ciampa make it up first. They slug it out and then a recovered Gargano crushes Dawkins with a superkick. Ford recovers and as Ciampa and Gargano have some mis-communication Ford runs their heads together sending Ciampa to the floor. Gargano flips a charging Ford over the top rope where he lands on Ciampa. Gargano’s tope attempt is met by a Ford right just as he was diving through the ropes. As the ref checks on Gargano, LeRae climbs and hits a rana on Ford from the top rope sending him flying into Dawkins. A suddenly okay Gargano whips Ford back in before walloping him with a springboard DDT. Gargano covers for two.

Ciampa tags in as a recovered B-Fab crushes LeRae with a high knee. (She had it coming, Gorilla.) Dawkins yanks a stunned Gargano to the floor as Ford rolls up Ciampa for two. Ford massacres Ciampa with a high knee before tagging Dawkins in. Dawkins hits a sit-out spinebuster on Ciampa before Ford crushes him with a frog splash. Dawkins covers for three.

Excellent tag match here. These two teams could put on a banger in their sleep, quite frankly. Good psychology, heels cheating up a storm, a big babyface comeback and a clean win. I enjoyed the hell out of it and I bet Hunter did too, given the NXT B&G era ties here. Match of the night so far. 3.75*

Winners – The Street Profits (Ford frog splash on Ciampa, Dawkins cover)

Backstage Nick Aldis is with Motor City Machine Guns as Carmelo Hayes sidles up to ask what he has to do to get a US title shot. The Miz flies in to apologize to Aldis for Hayes barging in, and tells a frustrated Hayes to slow down because he’ll handle things. Miz says since Aldis isn’t busy, and Chris Sabin interrupts to say that Miz is manipulating Hayes and asks Hayes directly “Are you HIM or are you his?” as he points at the Miz. Miz calls them the “Motor City Squirt Guns” and says they’re all noise, no impact. Alex Shelley likes how Miz used “impact” and says that Hayes and Miz wrestle like a team that just met in catering (BURN UNIT ALERT!). A screaming match ensues until Aldis makes a tag match for next week. We go to commercials.

Once back a highlights package of last week’s John Cena-Logan Paul confrontation plays. They’ll meet at Clash in Paris.

Byron Saxton welcomes in Ron “R-Truth” Killings. Saxton asks Truth how he feels about John Cena’s recent attitude adjustment (Oh Byron, you do go on.) and Truth, in James Brown fashion, says he feels good because his childhood hero, John Cena is back. Here’s Aleister Black to interrupt. Black says with friends like Truth, who needs enemies, referring to his destruction of Truth’s other friend, Damien Priest. Truth gets very serious and asks Black how he has the nerve to tell him who he is. Black tells Truth he’ll see him next week and Truth tells him he must have forgot who he was.

Here’s Sami Zayn and Jimmy Uso taping up and talking about when the last time they teamed was. Zayn tells Uso he appreciates him having his back during the MFT attack and says the same to a seated Jacob Fatu. Fatu rises and says he didn’t do it for Zayn, he did it for his “brother” Uso and he doesn’t even know Zayn that way. Zayn says Uso is his brother too and if he’s cool with Zayn, Fatu should be. Fatu tells Zayn to stay out of his way and leaves. The MFT’s make their entrance as we go to commercials.

Tessitore runs down next week’s card from Dublin, Ireland. John Cena will be there!

WWE Men’s US Champion Solo Sikoa, Tanga Loa, and JC Mateo vs Sami Zayn, Jimmy Uso and Jacob Fatu

Talla Tonga is seconding the MFT’s. It will be Uso and Mateo to start.

Mateo bullies Uso to a neutral corner and pops him in the mid-section. Mateo clubbers away but when he whips Uso to the opposite corner Uso slips his charge and kicks Mateo in the gut. Uso hits Mateo with an enziguri and tags in Zayn. Zayn comes off the second rope to sledge Mateo’s arm as Uso holds it. Mateo hoists Zayn up and pushes him to the MFT corner as Loa tags in. Loa clubbers away until the ref backs him off, so Sikoa grabs the tag rope and chokes Zayn with it. Loa dumps a dazed Zayn to the floor and gripes with the ref again, and that allows a looming Tonga to crush Zayn with a big boot. We go to commercials.

Back live with Sikoa headbutting Zayn to the canvas. Sikoa goes to ground and pound while barking at Zayn. Zayn tries to fire up but Sikoa grabs him by the head and pounds it into the mat repeatedly. Mateo tags in and he and Sikoa hit simultaneous headbutts on Zayn (We don’t have to try murdering people to win matches, guys. Those Samoan heads are mighty powerful objects!) Mateo whips Zayn to a neutral corner but Zayn slips his charge as Mateo flies into the top turnbuckle. Sikoa tags in and wipes out Uso from the apron before chirping at Fatu. Sikoa drags Zayn to a neutral corner and chops away.

Sikoa mounts Zayn on the top turnbuckle but Zayn finally fights back with some rights. Zayn hits a tornado DDT on Sikoa. Zayn manages to tag Fatu as Loa tags in. Fatu runs Loa over with two clotheslines and then pops him with a right. Loa hits a knee that Fatu no-sells before Fatu crushes Loa with another clothesline. Fatu hits a standing senton and as Loa staggers to a neutral corner Fatu hammers him with a running splash. Fatu mounts the second rope and drops ten headbutts to Loa who falls to a seated position. Fatu wallops him with the hip attack before shimmying. Mateo charges in and Fatu dumps him over the top rope with a clothesline. Fatu holds the top rope down as Uso flies over to crush Mateo with a tope con hilo.

Loa charges in and Fatu calmly hoists him into a fall-away Samoan Drop. Fatu covers and gets two. Fatu ascends and kicks Sikoa away as he tries to stop what’s next. Fatu’s swanton attempt is met by Loa’s raised knees. Loa tags Sikoa in and he ascends to crush Fatu with a top rope splash. Sikoa covers for a LONG two. A frustrated Sikoa whales away at Fatu but Fatu shakes it off and superkicks Sikoa. (I sometimes wonder if guys just get tired of working with each other. It feels like Sikoa and Fatu have been fighting forever at this point.) Sikoa responds with his own superkick and as Fatu comes off the ropes they wallop each other with simultaneous clotheslines. Zayn staggers up the steps and calls for the tag, which Fatu reluctantly makes. Zayn immediately nails Sikoa with the Blue Thunder Bomb but Mateo breaks up the cover at two.

Mateo whales away at Zayn before Uso charges in to superkick Mateo away. Loa drops Uso with a forearm before he eats a Fatu superkick. Fatu superkicks Tonga off the apron. Fatu just murders Tonga with a tope suicida sending him flying over the announce desk. Sikoa tries to spike a revived Zayn, but Zayn kicks Sikoa’s hand to stop it. Zayn hits a charging Sikoa with the Exploder. Zayn sets up in the corner and blasts Sikoa with the Helluva Kick. Zayn covers Sikoa for three.

This was kind of clunky in spots but the crowd was SUPER into it. If you’re having a Smackdown without Cena or Cody these days, you better send people home happy and this was a great way to do that. I was bummed not to see Fatu’s beaut of a moonsault but his tope on Talla Tonga was goddamn ridiculous. Really fun way to end the show, and clearly set up a big match between Sikoa and Zayn for down the road. Take the stars, lads. 3.5*

Winners – Sami Zayn, Jimmy Uso and Jacob Fatu (Zayn Helluva Kick to Sikoa)

Post-match sees Zayn and Uso dap it up before Uso encourages Fatu to accept Zayn. They hug it out to a huge ovation from the crowd as the credits roll and we’re out.

Like I said in the notes of the main event, if you’re going to have a Smackdown without John Cena or Cody Rhodes these days, you better bring some fun to the crowd and I honestly thought tonight wasn’t too bad in that regard. I’m a little underwhelmed at Tiffany Stratton having to still deal with Nia Jax and Jade Cargill, but at least the idea of her facing Giulia was floated and I could be into that should it ever occur. The tag scene remains in flux but this current story with Miz and Melo could stick some life into it. DIY and the Profits had a banger that was a thing of beauty in terms of tag wrestling. The main event was a very joyful way to end the show and send the fans home happy. Zayn imitating Fatu’s shimmy was really funny and I’m glad they caught it as the show ended. Sue me, I’m going thumbs up tonight.
