What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – 04.23.94

Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler are commentating, concluding the taping in Lowell, Massachusetts. McMahon’s microphone does not work for introductions because it is unplugged, allowing Lawler to put himself over.

Doink the Clown and Dink come down the aisle for the next match and Doink has a metal bucket with him. Lawler resumes his criticisms of Doink from the previous year so Doink tosses confetti on him.

Opening Contest: Doink the Clown (w/Dink) (13-0) pins Bert Centeno after the Whoopie Cushion at 2:42:

As per usual, Dink does some comedy spots with Centeno before the opening bell. Centeno refocuses and gets a few near-falls from a schoolboy roll up and dropkick. However, his blind charge hits boot and Doink outwrestles him the rest of the way.

Mr. Perfect is this week’s guest on the Heartbreak Hotel. Shawn Michaels mocks Intercontinental Champion Razor Ramon’s accent, reiterating Diesel’s challenge for a title match. In a nice piece of storyline continuity, Perfect says he does not hold a grudge because if he did he would not come on Michaels’ talk show or shake his hand. But in a nod to how that is not true he says that Luger knocking him out 386 days ago at WrestleMania IX is not a reason for him to have hard feelings toward the All-American star. He reminds Lex Luger that no one can put their hands on him and get away with it. Perfect had good intensity for the promo but his material in all of the talking segments has been the same for weeks. This would be his last appearance until the 1995 Survivor Series.

The Smoking Gunns (8-1) beat Austin Steele & Joe Smith when Billy pins Smith after the Sidewinder at 2:08:

Continuing a story from Monday Night RAW, Lawler makes fun of Piper’s Pit. That and hype for the Luger-Perfect feud are talked about more than the match, where the Gunns notch a fourth-straight victory.

Live Event News showcases more WWF charity work as Stan Lane discusses how the WWF gave $60,000 for a library in Stamford, Connecticut.

Irwin R. Schyster (9-2) defeats Bert Stiles via submission to the Penalty at 3:28:

IRS reminds fans that Tatanka got beat up and his headdress torn apart because he did not pay a gift tax. He also rips on Nikolai Volkoff not getting a new suit. After Stiles scores a fluke sunset flip for a near-fall, Chief Jay Strongbow appears in the split screen and cuts the shortest promo in the history of the show, only saying “war.” If Strongbow leaned into his actual heritage he could have told IRS to get his shine box ready. After some methodical work, IRS submits Stiles with his new finishing move.

A new Duke Droese vignette shows him going through a garbage pile, telling people around him that business is going well. Lawler jokes that Droese was looking for lunch.

Non-Title Match: Razor Ramon (Intercontinental Champion) (11-0) beat Adam Bomb (w/Harvey Wippleman) (4-3) after the Razor’s Edge at 3:34:

Another Wippleman wrestler has a non-title match this week, showing Wippleman’s inability to negotiate title shots. McMahon plays some of that up on commentary, saying that Bomb would be better off without his manager. Bomb continues to struggle even though he dominates most of this quick match against Ramon. He puts his head down too early on an Irish whip and Ramon plants him with an impressive Razor’s Edge. The last spot seems tailor made for putting over how Ramon could do that to Diesel in a future matchup. Rating: **

Lawler catches up with Ramon in the aisle, asking about Diesel’s challenge. Ramon says he does not back down from a fight. Lawler gets him to accept a title match against Diesel on next week’s program.

Non-Title Match: The Quebecers (WWF Tag Team Champions w/Johnny Polo) (8-3-1) defeated Scott Taylor & Ben Jordan when Pierre pins Taylor after the assisted top rope senton bomb at 2:09:

Dominic Shaw is the guest fan ring announcer, continuing a string of them at this taping who did well. Captain Lou Albano appears in the split screen and says that he is confident WWF President Jack Tunney will give the Headshrinkers a WWF Tag Team title shot on Monday Night RAW. This turns into a fast-paced squash as the Quebecers use their bodies to bludgeon the enhancement team. After winning, Polo, who wears a suit and appears more professional than he has ever been, puts two small Canadian flags in Taylor’s mouth.

Owen Hart (14-0) beats Gary Sabaugh via submission to the Sharpshooter at 2:45:

Sabaugh’s size advantage allows him to remain competitive with Owen but Owen keeps outmaneuvering him, blasting Sabaugh with an enzuigiri when his leg is caught and using a spinning heel kick to regain control after being taken to the turnbuckles. This taping showed that Owen was getting more heel heat after his big win at WrestleMania. The crowd loved to chant “We want Bret!” during this match.

Stan Lane urges fans to call the WWF to see if they can help them fundraise for a good cause.

Lawler interviews Diesel and Shawn Michaels. Diesel says that Ramon has fallen into a trap and he is going to win the title next week.

The Last Word: This was a solid show that did a good job building the Razor Ramon-Diesel title match. It did make Ramon seem like he was living under a rock for a few weeks in taking so long to respond to Diesel’s challenge, though.
