Fantasy Booking: Owen Hart As The WWF Champion

When wrestling fans talk about the greatest wrestlers that never held a major world title in the WWF/E, Owen Hart‘s name comes up every single time. Known for his fantastic in-ring skills, agility and charisma, The Rocket could do it all… except win the big one. Despite being one of the most talented wrestlers of his generation and one of the hottest heels in the World Wrestling Federation at one point, Owen never got his hands on the WWF Title.
In real life, Owen quietly left the title picture after losing to his brother, Bret Hart, at SummerSlam 1994. But what if Owen just didn’t settle for being second best? What if he decided to use his wits and ambition to force his way to the top? In this fantasy booking, Owen Hart will manipulate his way to the WWF Championship using strategy, timing and the right “alliance” to take what’s rightfully his, no matter the cost. Enjoy!
SummerSlam 1994: The Final Clash
We’re starting this story at SummerSlam 1994, where Owen Hart challenges his brother Bret for the WWF Championship inside a steel cage. The match is billed as the final encounter between the Hart brothers. The Hitman, much like in real life, retains the belt after escaping the cage. With the stipulation that Owen can no longer fight Bret or get a world title shot while Bret’s the champion, Owen can do nothing but accept defeat. But we’re talking about 1994 Owen Hart, so there’s no way The King of Harts will simply move on.
Instead of fading into the background, Owen tries to find a way around the rule. So, he joins forces with Bret’s next challenger, Mr. Bob Backlund. The former WWF Champion is determined to get back the title that he “never lost” against The Iron Sheik back in 1983, and Owen is there to support him. In reality, Owen sees this as the perfect opportunity to cost his brother the WWF Title by “using” the eccentric and desperate Backlund to get there. During the contract signing for the Bret vs Backlund ‘Throw in the Towel Match’ at Survivor Series, Owen presents a special contract that Backlund signs without even reading.
Survivor Series 1994: And New!
Bret Hart vs Bob Backlund plays out like in real life, with The Hitman getting caught in the Crossface Chickenwing for a long time. Owen manipulates their mother, Helen Hart, who eventually throws in the towel in order to protect Bret. Just like that, Bob Backlund regains the World Wrestling Federation Championship eleven years after losing in similar fashion. Backlund goes insane after the bell rings, and Owen enters the ring. Backlund hugs him, but Owen still looks sad. He delivers a piledriver to Backlund and the crowd goes ballistic. Owen has finally turned face one year after the whole Hart family feud began.
Owen grabs a microphone and thanks the fans for their appreciation… but it’s a prank! Owen reveals the contract that Backlund signed contains a clause that grants Owen a title shot immediately. Jack Tunney comes down to stop it, but Owen shows him the clause. Tunney has no choice but to make it official. Owen Hart is cashing in “Money in the Bank” a decade before that became a thing! The referee rings the bell and Owen beats Backlund in seconds. One year after the storyline started, Owen Hart is the new World Wrestling Federation Champion. And the best part? Per the SummerSlam stip, Bret isn’t allowed to fight Owen!
Royal Rumble 1995: Owen Hart’s First Challenger
So, with Bret out of the title picture and Backlund nowhere to be seen, Owen Hart’s first challenger is Big Daddy Cool, Diesel. Shawn Michaels can’t believe it. He’s cutting promos every week on television, saying there’s no way “the bodyguard” will become the world champion before “the true star” does. Much like at King of the Ring 1994 against Bret, Diesel almost wins the title here. However, Shawn Michaels interferes in the match, costing Diesel the chance to win the belt to set up Diesel vs Michaels in a non-title match at WrestleMania 11. Meanwhile, Bret Hart is forced to win the Royal Rumble Match to get a title shot.
He enters the match early, but that doesn’t stop him. Bret is determined to get back to the top and he knows this is the only way to get a shot. The final four men left standing in the 1995 Royal Rumble are: Bret Hart, Lex Luger, The British Bulldog and Jerry Lawler. Bret and Luger nearly eliminate each other at the same time like the year before, but this time they manage to hold on. Lawler, the cheapshot artist, delivers a knee to Luger’s back in an attempt to eliminate both men at the same time, but only Luger gets eliminated. Then, Bret and Bulldog team up to get rid of Lawler, and it comes down to Bret vs Bulldog. After a tense back-and-forth, Bret outsmarts Bulldog and wins the Royal Rumble.
WrestleMania 11: Owen Hart Vs Bret Hart In The Main Event
WrestleMania 11 finally brings the two brothers face-to-face in their ultimate showdown. They fight each other for the WWF Championship in the main event, but this isn’t any ordinary bout. It’s essentially a Three Stages of Hell Match with a cute name that I couldn’t come up with! I’ll leave that to Vince McMahon and the WWF’s marketing team. Anyway, the first match would be a singles match (much like their first major match at WrestleMania 10), the second match would be a cage match (much like their second major match at SummerSlam). The final fall, “if necessary” – everyone knows it’s always necessary! – would be a Submission Match with their father, Stu Hart, as the special guest referee.
First Fall – Singles Match
The first fall sees Bret and Owen clashing in a straight singles match. Bret is aggressive as usual, while Owen uses his speed and a few underhanded tactics to stay one step ahead of his brother. In the closing moments of the fall, Owen blocks a victory roll for the pin a la WrestleMania 10, but Bret kicks out at 2.99999 which draws a huge pop from the crowd. Bret starts making the comeback and eventually goes for the Sharpshooter. However, as Bret goes for it, Owen viciously pulls him by the hair right into a pinning position (without the referee seeing it) AND puts both knees on top of Bret’s hair to steal the pin.

Second Fall – Steel Cage Match
Bret’s pissed now. He uses the cage as a weapon while Owen, desperate to hold onto his title, looks for ways to simply get out. However, his older brother is always there to keep him inside the cage, shutting down Owen’s attempts to escape. In the chaos, Owen manages to avoid a move and Bret ends up knocking himself out after eating the cage. Owen takes his sweet time and even throws a big celebration as if he’s just won the World Cup. He finally asks the official to open the door… but the unpredictable Bob Backlund is there. Owen begs for mercy, saying it was just business, but Backlund isn’t having it. He closes the door and takes down Owen in the process, allowing Bret to escape on the other side to win the second fall.

Third Fall – Submission Match
The only way this rivalry between the Hart brothers could end. Stu Hart joins us at ringside while several backstage workers remove the steel cage – this was still 1995, remember! A few moments later, the two brothers (both exhausted after nearly 30 minutes of intense wrestling) start fighting again. Owen tries to cheat in their very first sequence, but Stu slaps him on the hand. He’s not having any of that, this is all about technical wrestling and the ability to beat your opponent into submission. The Hitman tries to wear his brother down. Owen, to his credit, uses his own strength and agility to avoid being trapped. The brutal nature of the match pushes both men to their limits, with both using countless submission holds until Bret finally applies the Sharpshooter. Owen doesn’t want to quit, but after a long struggle, Owen surrenders.

Winner: Bret Hart
The Hart Family feud finally ends with Bret Hart regaining the World Wrestling Federation Championship. When Owen gets back up, Stu shakes his hand and hugs him out of respect. Bret wants a handshake as well, but Owen refuses and walks away. Bret Hart celebrates his third WWF Title win to close the show.
